Chapter 8 - The Legal Tsunami

“LILY!”

Before the nanny or the security guards could react, Lily ripped her hand away from Cole’s grip. She kicked off her oversized patent leather shoes and sprinted across the polished marble floor as fast as her eight-year-old legs could carry her.

“Stop her!” Cole hissed in a panicked whisper to his guard.

“Touch that child and you spend tonight in Al-Awir central prison,” Tariq Al-Mansoor boomed, stepping forward with the full authority of the High Court.

Lily slammed into my legs with enough force to knock the wind out of me.

I dropped to my knees, throwing my arms around her small, shaking frame. I buried my face in her hair, breathing in the scent of daisy soap and tears that I thought I had lost forever.

“I’m here, baby,” I sobbed, rocking her against my chest. “Mommy’s here. I’ve got you. Nobody is ever taking you away again. Never. Never.”

“Mommy, you came,” Lily wailed, her arms clamped around my neck like steel bands. “You found me! I hid my book, Mommy! I hid my book!”

“I know, my brave girl. I know.”

Across the room, total chaos erupted.

Cole stepped forward, his face mottled red with pure, desperate fury. “Officers! This woman has no rights here! I have filed an emergency petition! That child is under my legal custody!”

“Mr. Vance,” the lead Dubai Police captain said, stepping directly into Cole’s path and unfolding the court writ. “By order of Judge Al-Haddad of the Court of Urgent Matters, your petition has been dismissed with prejudice on the grounds of criminal fraud, perjury, and child endangerment.”

“That’s impossible!” Cole shrieked, losing every shred of his polished composure. “Sultan! Tell them! We have a contract! We are signing tonight!”

Sultan Al-Fassi walked slowly down the dais steps, his presence commanding absolute silence across the stunned crowd. He stopped five feet from Cole.

“There will be no contract, Mr. Vance,” Sultan said, his voice like grinding millstones.

Nadia stepped up beside her father, pulling a folder from her designer clutch.

“At four o’clock today,” Nadia announced clearly for the entire high-society assembly to hear, “our audit division froze all corporate credit facilities extended to Mr. Vance. At five o’clock, we received the official federal indictment from the United States Department of Justice confirming that Mr. Vance paid a quarter of a million dollars to bribe this child’s maternal relatives to illegally abduct her from her mother.”

Murmurs of absolute horror and disgust rippled through the gathered elite. Women gasped behind their silk wraps; ambassadors turned their backs in cold disdain.

“Nadia... please,” Cole begged, his voice cracking, looking around at the guests who had been toasting him ten minutes ago. “It’s a misunderstanding! I did it for us! I wanted us to have a family!”

“You are not a man,” Nadia said with utter revulsion. “You are a criminal who trades in innocent lives. Do not ever speak my name again.”

The police captain stepped behind Cole.

The sound of stainless steel handcuffs locking around Cole’s wrists echoed sharply across the quiet hall.

“Cole Vance,” the captain stated formally. “You are under arrest for fraud, forged entry documentation, and international parental kidnapping pursuant to an Interpol Red Notice. You will be remanded to federal custody pending immediate extradition proceedings.”

Cole thrashed against the officer's grip, his face contorted in ugly, feral desperation as they dragged him toward the service exit.

“Lauren!” he screamed, his eyes wild with terror. “Lauren, tell them to stop! You can’t leave me here! Lauren!”

I stood up, holding Lily tightly in my arms. Her face was buried safely in the crook of my neck, her small hands clutching the lapels of my black blazer.

I looked Cole dead in the eyes as he was dragged past me.

“We’ve all decided,” I said, throwing his own mother’s words right back into his teeth, “it’s better without you.”
