Chapter 7 - The Gala of Deceit

The Armani Hotel ballroom inside the Burj Khalifa was the epitome of opulence.

Crystal chandeliers hung like frozen waterfalls from forty-foot ceilings. The room was filled with hundreds of dignitaries, international investors, ambassadors, and high-society elite dressed in flowing black abayas, crisp kanduras, and bespoke tuxedos. A string quartet played softly near an ice sculpture carved into the emblem of the Al-Fassi empire.

In the center of the room stood Cole.

He looked triumphant. He held a glass of sparkling cider, laughing heartily with three European venture capitalists. He checked his diamond-encrusted watch every few minutes, waiting for his moment of glory.

Standing nearby near the elevated VIP dais was Sultan Al-Fassi, an imposing man with a silver beard and a presence that commanded absolute deference. Beside him stood Nadia, breathtaking in an emerald-green silk gown, her expression unreadable, watching Cole like a hawk watching a field mouse.

At exactly eight-fifteen, the heavy double doors at the side of the ballroom opened.

A uniformed private security guard stepped through, accompanied by the female nanny.

And between them walked Lily.

She wore a delicate, frilly white dress that clearly didn't fit her properly—it was too long, the lace scratching at her wrists. Her hair had been pulled into tight, elaborate curls, completely unlike the messy ponytail she loved. Her little hands were clenched into tight fists at her sides, her head bowed low, staring at her shiny patent leather shoes.

She looked like a captive being led to an auction block.

Cole’s face lit up with an oily, triumphant glow. He immediately broke away from his conversation, striding across the polished floor toward her.

“Lily, sweetheart!” Cole announced loudly, drawing the attention of the surrounding guests. “Come meet everyone! Come meet Grandfather Sultan!”

Lily flinched when his hand touched her shoulder. She pulled her neck down, refusing to look at him.

Cole leaned down, whispering through clenched teeth with a smile still plastered across his face, “Smile, Lily. Look up and smile, or we’re going straight back to your room with no dinner.”

Sultan Al-Fassi stepped down from the dais, his walking cane clicking against the marble floor. Cole puffed out his chest, stepping forward to present her.

“Sultan Al-Fassi,” Cole beamed, his voice carrying effortlessly. “Allow me to introduce my greatest pride. My daughter, Lily. As I’ve always said, a man who cannot shepherd his own family has no business stewarding an international enterprise.”

Sultan looked down at Lily. His sharp, wise eyes softened with immediate concern as he noticed the child trembling from head to toe.

“Little one,” Sultan said gently in English. “Are you well?”

Lily didn't answer. She just stared at the floor, biting her trembling bottom lip until it bled.

“She’s just shy, sir,” Cole chuckled smoothly, reaching to grab Lily’s chin to force her head up. “She’s been through so much, but now that she’s finally home with her loving father—”

“She is not with her father!” a voice rang out across the ballroom.

The room went dead silent.

The string quartet stopped mid-measure.

Every eye in the grand ballroom turned toward the main entrance.

I stood in the doorway.

Flanked by four uniformed officers of the Dubai Police, two plainclothes detectives, and Tariq Al-Mansoor carrying the scarlet-sealed judicial folder, I walked straight down the center aisle.

Cole froze, the color instantly draining from his face as though a plug had been pulled from his veins.

“What... what is the security doing?” Cole stammered, glancing frantically around the room. “Get this woman out of here! She is an intruder!”

“Mommy?”

The tiny voice shattered the silence of the room.

Lily’s head snapped up.

Her big, tear-filled eyes locked onto mine.

May you like

“MOMMY!”
