Chapter 5 - The Cracking Foundation

The mid-day heat in downtown Dubai was suffocating, but inside Tariq Al-Mansoor’s high-rise office overlooking the Dubai Fountain, the atmosphere was freezing cold.
On the large wall-mounted monitor, live news from an American affiliate played silently on a loop:
*BREAKING NEWS: SUBURBAN GRANDPARENTS INDICTED IN INTERNATIONAL KIDNAPPING RING.*
The mugshots of my mother, my father, and Matt were displayed prominently across the screen. My mother’s perfectly coiffed hair was a mess; my father looked utterly broken; Matt was staring down in shame. The scandal had exploded across social media. Local news crews back home were camped out outside Eleanor’s suburban home, filming the police carrying out boxes of financial records and hard drives.
Elena sat at the long conference table, her laptop connected to a secure video conference with Assistant U.S. Attorney Marcus Vance in New York.
“The magistrate just signed the federal arrest warrant for Cole Vance,” Marcus’s voice crackled through the speaker. “Wire fraud, international parental kidnapping, and extortion. We’ve transmitted the expedited dossier to the UAE Ministry of Justice and the Interpol National Central Bureau in Abu Dhabi. But Tariq is right—procedural processing can take forty-eight to seventy-two hours unless an emergency judicial officer intervenes locally.”
“We don't have seventy-two hours,” I said, pacing the room like a caged animal. “Cole is parading Lily at that gala tonight at eight. If he gets that partnership signed, he’ll disappear her into an offshore private estate or a private jet to a non-extradition sanctuary before the Interpol warrant even clears the printer.”
Suddenly, Tariq’s office phone rang. He put it on speaker.
“Advocate Al-Mansoor?” a woman’s voice came through. It was refined, cool, and unmistakably authoritative.
“Good afternoon, Miss Al-Fassi,” Tariq replied instantly, gesturing for us to remain silent. “Thank you for taking my call.”
It was Nadia Al-Fassi. Cole’s fiancée.
“Tariq,” Nadia said, a trace of tension in her melodic voice. “You sent an encrypted file to my private office ten minutes ago. My security team verified the authenticity of the federal court filings from the United States. Is this... is this genuinely Cole?”
Tariq leaned toward the microphone. “Nadia, I have Lauren Hayes sitting in my office right now. The biological mother of Lily.”
There was a long, sharp intake of breath on the other end of the line.
“Cole told my father and me that Lauren died in a rehabilitation center eighteen months ago,” Nadia said, her voice dropping into a register of profound shock. “He told us he spent two years fighting through courts to rescue his daughter from negligent guardians, and that he finally obtained full legal custody through an American court decree.”
“He lied to you,” I said, unable to stay silent. “Miss Al-Fassi, please. My name is Lauren. Cole abandoned my daughter when she was five years old. He hasn't seen her in three years. He paid my mother two hundred and fifty thousand dollars to steal Lily during a three-day vacation to Dubai. My mother is currently in a federal holding cell in New York. Cole is using my daughter to prove to your family that he is a moral, family-oriented businessman.”
The silence on the line stretched for five agonizing seconds.
When Nadia spoke again, the coolness in her voice had turned into glacial rage.
“My father, Sultan Al-Fassi, built our family’s name over fifty years on honor, integrity, and faith,” Nadia said evenly. “We do not break families. We do not traffic children. And we do not allow deceitful scavengers to soil our house.”
“Miss Al-Fassi,” Elena intervened. “If Cole realizes you know the truth, he may try to flee the country with Lily before we can execute a court order.”
“Cole knows nothing yet,” Nadia replied coldly. “He is currently at a private tailor in the Dubai Mall getting fitted for his tuxedo. He left Lily at the villa with two private security guards and a domestic worker. He told me he would bring Lily to the gala at eight-thirty to introduce her to my father.”
“Can you cancel the gala?” I pleaded.
“If I cancel the gala, Cole will know something is wrong and he will take the child and run,” Nadia said, her tactical intelligence evident in every syllable. “Cole’s private accounts are already partially linked to our holding firm’s financial clearinghouse for tonight’s signing. I will personally freeze his corporate lines of credit at five p.m. under the pretext of a pre-merger audit. He won't be able to charter a private plane or access foreign liquidity.”
She paused.
“Tariq, can you obtain an emergency Child Protection Order from the Dubai Court of Urgent Matters before eight o’clock?”
“With the federal indictment, the proof of wire fraud, and your personal affidavit confirming Cole’s fraudulent misrepresentation to your family? Yes,” Tariq said firmly. “Judge Al-Haddad is on duty at the urgent bench. He will issue an immediate recovery warrant.”
“Then do it,” Nadia said. “And Lauren?”
“Yes?” I whispered.

“Do not worry,” Nadia said softly, with the fierce solidarity of a woman who refused to let an innocent child be broken. “Bring the police and your court order directly to the ballroom tonight. Let Cole bring the child into the light. And together, we will end him.”
