Chapter 6 - The Secret Message

At four-fifteen in the afternoon, while Tariq and Elena were in front of the judge at the Dubai Court of Urgent Matters, a small miracle occurred.
A courier arrived at Tariq’s office building carrying a manila envelope.
The envelope had been handed to the front gate security of Emirates Hills by an independent child psychologist, Dr. Sarah Lindqvist, whom Cole’s legal team had hastily hired that morning to produce an emergency “child adjustment evaluation” for the court.
Inside the envelope was a brief, formal memo from Dr. Lindqvist stating that she was immediately terminating her professional engagement with Mr. Cole Vance due to ethical concerns regarding the child’s extreme emotional distress.
Attached to the memo with a paperclip was a single folded sheet of cream-colored stationery.
My hands shook violently as I unfolded it.
It wasn't typed.
It was drawn in purple crayon.
A drawing of a small girl standing under an enormous daisy, holding hands with a taller woman with long brown hair. Above the drawing, in uneven, eight-year-old handwriting, were the words:
*Mommy please come get me. He locked my suitcase. I hid my daisy book in my socks. I want to go home.*
I pressed the paper against my chest and wept.
She was fighting. My eight-year-old baby was trapped in that gilded cage, surrounded by guards and strangers, and she had managed to smuggle a note out through a visiting doctor. She had hidden her daisy book in her socks. She was holding on because she knew—she *knew*—her mother was coming for her.
“Lauren,” Elena said, bursting into the office, her face radiant with victory. “We got it.”
Behind her, Tariq walked in holding an official document stamped with the gold crest of the United Arab Emirates and the scarlet wax seal of the Dubai Public Prosecution.
“Emergency Child Protection and Recovery Order,” Tariq announced, his eyes gleaming. “Authorizing Dubai Police to take immediate, physical custody of the minor Lily Hayes and remand her directly into the custody of her legal mother, Lauren Hayes. Cole Vance is barred from approaching within five hundred meters of the child.”
“And the federal warrant?” I asked, wiping my tears.
“Interpol Abu Dhabi just formally acknowledged the Red Notice,” Elena said. “The moment this local order is executed, Cole will be detained for international extradition.”
I looked at the clock on the office wall.
Six-thirty p.m.
Ninety minutes until the gala began at the Armani Hotel.

“Get ready, Lauren,” Elena said, handing me a simple, elegant black blazer. “Tonight, you take your daughter back.”
