Chapter 7 - The Social Media Retaliation

Julian’s sudden departure sent shockwaves through Paige’s digital empire, and like any cornered predator, she did the only thing she knew how to do: she went on the attack.
At eight o’clock that evening, Ryan’s phone pinged with a notification from Paige’s TikTok and Instagram accounts.
"You need to see this," Ryan said, his jaw tightening as he turned his iPad toward me.
Paige was sitting on her childhood bedroom floor, wrapped in an oversized cashmere sweater. Her makeup was deliberately washed out, tears streaking her mascara, and she was clutching a framed childhood photograph of the two of us.
"Hi, everyone," she sobbed into the lens, her voice trembling in a masterclass of theatrical grief. "I’m making this video because the smear campaign against me has gone too far. My sister, Maya, has struggled with deep jealousy and mental instability for years. Yesterday was supposed to be the happiest day of my life, but Maya showed up intoxicated, threatened to ruin my wedding, and started an altercation near the pool."
I felt the blood drain from my face.
"When I tried to hug her and calm her down," Paige continued, her lower lip quivering pathetically, "she grabbed my arm and lost her footing on the wet marble. I tried to pull her back, but she slipped and fell. Now, she and her bitter ex-boyfriend are demanding half a million dollars in extortion money, threatening to put me in jail unless I pay for her luxury lifestyle. Julian was terrified by her threats and was forced to flee the state."
She looked directly into the camera, letting a single tear fall. "Maya, if you're watching this... please get help. I forgive you for what you've done to my marriage. But I won't let you blackmail our family anymore."
The comment section was already tearing itself in two. Hundreds of Paige’s loyal followers were spamming hateful messages across my dormant LinkedIn, my work email, and my old Facebook page:
*How could you do that to your own sister on her wedding day?*
*Disgusting jealous psycho! Hope your shoulder never heals!*
*Extortionist! Go to jail!*
I stared at the screen, my heart pounding so hard my surgical stitches throbbed with a burning fire.
"She thinks she can win in the court of public opinion," Ryan whispered, his eyes narrowed with lethal calm. "She thinks that because she had two hundred thousand followers, the truth doesn't matter."
"Can she get away with this?" I asked, my voice shaking with a dangerous mixture of fury and betrayal. "If people believe her—if my company sees this—"
"She just committed felony defamation on a public platform while out on bail," Ryan interrupted, pulling out his laptop and plugging in a hard drive. "And she forgot one very important detail."
"What detail?"

Ryan clicked open a folder labeled *Westlake Country Club Archives*. "The country club doesn't just record video, Maya. Their high-end surveillance system records directional spatial audio. And the club manager happens to be my brother-in-law's closest friend."
