Chapter 21 - Cleaning the Manor

The weekend arrived with clear blue skies and a gentle summer breeze.

At the Vance estate, three large commercial donation trucks were parked along the circular driveway. Moving crews moved in and out of the grand front doors, carrying out racks of designer fur coats, rows of luxury shoes, and dozens of extravagant oil portraits that Eleanor had commissioned of herself and Paige over the years.

I stood on the upper mezzanine, watching the purge.

"Everything?" Ryan asked, coming up behind me with two cups of iced coffee and handing one to me.

"Everything that carries their ghost," I replied, taking a sip and smiling. "All of Paige’s designer clothes are being donated to a women’s shelter downtown. Eleanor’s jewelry collection is being auctioned off, and the proceeds are funding a scholarship for underprivileged business students."

"Your grandfather would be proud, Maya," Ryan said softly, his arm resting gently against the mahogany railing beside mine. "He spent his entire life building an empire, but he never knew how to heal his family. You’re doing both."

We walked down the curved staircase into the grand living room, which now felt airy, bright, and open. The heavy velvet drapes that Eleanor had used to keep the house dark and brooding had been torn down, allowing warm natural sunlight to flood the polished hardwood floors.

In the corner of the room, my old upright piano—the one Paige had forbidden me to play because she claimed the sound gave her migraines—stood polished and restored.

I walked over to the piano, ran my fingers over the ivory keys, and played a soft, melodic chord. The sound resonated through the vast, empty hall, pure and resonant.

"What are your plans for tonight?" Ryan asked, leaning against the side of the piano with a warm, affectionate smile.

"Tonight?" I looked at him, laughing softly. "Tonight, I think I’m going to sit out on the terrace, eat takeout pizza, and watch the stars without waiting for someone to scream at me."

"Can I invite myself to that party?" he teased.

"Only if you promise not to push me into the pool," I joked, tilting my head.

Ryan’s expression softened, his eyes filled with quiet, fierce devotion. "I promise, Maya. For the rest of my life... I’ll only be there to pull you up."

May you like

The warmth in my chest swelled into a happiness so profound it took my breath away. For years, I had survived on scraps of hope, waiting for the blows to fall. But now, surrounded by sunlight, truth, and genuine love, I knew that the scars of my past were no longer chains—they were armor.
