Chapter 13 - The Vault at Midnight

"I don't think I've won," I replied calmly. "I know justice is finally being served."

Paige let out a bitter, raspy laugh that sent a shiver straight down my spine. She pulled an ivory-colored keycard and a small brass key from her jacket pocket, dangling them between two trembling fingers.

"Do you remember Grandfather's private vault in the basement of the Oakridge house?" Paige sneered, her eyes gleaming with a manic, dangerous triumph. "The one Dad told you was emptied out five years ago?"

My blood ran cold.

When Grandfather Arthur died, my father claimed the antique walk-in safe in the study had been drilled open and emptied by the bank to pay off estate taxes. There had supposedly been nothing inside except old tax receipts and useless corporate ledgers.

"Dad lied to you, Maya," Paige purred, stepping back toward the shadow of the garage pillars. "Dad never emptied it. Because Dad didn't have the key. Grandfather gave the master key to *me* when I was twenty-one, because he thought I was the smart one. And last night, while you and your pet dog Ryan were celebrating your little legal victory... I went down into that cellar."

"What did you do, Paige?" Ryan took a menacing step forward, but Paige quickly backed away toward an idling sedan parked fifty feet away, whose headlights suddenly clicked on, blinding us.

Inside the idling car sat Eleanor, gripping the steering wheel with white knuckles.

"You think Grandfather left everything to the trust?" Paige laughed, a wild, breathless sound. "Grandfather had another life before he built that distribution empire. There's a sealed envelope in that vault, Maya. Addressed to the state securities board, with thirty years of hidden bank accounts in Switzerland, offshore shell companies, and the real reason Grandfather cut Mom out of his life."

Paige leaned forward, her face twisted in pure malice.

"And do you know whose name is on the registration of those offshore accounts, Maya? Do you know who Grandfather used as his legal front to hide forty million dollars of unregistered foreign assets twenty years ago?"

The world seemed to tilt beneath my feet.

"Yours," Paige whispered with a wicked grin. "Your signature. Your social security number. You were sixteen years old, and you signed whatever Grandfather put in front of you. That envelope doesn't just destroy this family, Maya... if that envelope lands on the desk of the federal prosecutor, you won't just lose the company. You'll be sharing a prison cell right next to me."

Paige sprinted to the passenger side of Eleanor’s sedan, dove into the seat, and slammed the door.

The car’s tires screeched against the concrete, smoke billowing into the damp air as Eleanor accelerated toward the exit ramp, disappearing into the blinding daylight outside.

I stood frozen in the dim garage, the cold brass key having vanished with her, the phantom weight of a forty-million-dollar ghost closing its fingers around my throat.

Ryan turned to me, his face pale with shock. "Maya... what did she just say?"

I looked down at my trembling hand, the horror of a past I never knew existed rising up to swallow me whole.
