Chapter 5 - The Ambush in the Hallway

Discharge was supposed to be a quiet process, but peace never lasted long when Eleanor Cole was involved.

Ryan had just returned from the hospital pharmacy with three prescription bottles of painkillers, anti-inflammatories, and antibiotics when the heavy door to my private room burst open without a knock.

My mother marched in like an invading general. She wore an immaculate silk blouse and dark sunglasses, though the trembling in her manicured hands betrayed her pristine exterior. Behind her trailed Paige, her face blotchy and swollen from crying, devoid of the smug glow she had worn on the pool deck eighteen hours earlier.

"Thank God you’re awake," Eleanor snapped, not once looking at the heavy sling bound around my torso or the IV bruise on my left wrist. She dropped a leather folder onto my lap. "Sign this immediately. We don't have much time."

I looked down at the documents. It was a pre-drafted sworn affidavit, printed on legal letterhead. The bold text stated that I, Maya Cole, voluntarily conceded that my fall into the estate pool had been the result of an accidental loss of footing on slippery tiles, completely absolving Paige Cole of all civil, criminal, and financial culpability.

"Get that off her lap," Ryan’s voice cut through the room like a steel blade. He stepped between my bed and my mother, his height towering over both women. "She just had major reconstructive surgery. You have thirty seconds to leave before I press the emergency call button."

"Shut up, Ryan! This is a family matter!" Paige shrieked, stepping forward with her eyes wild. "Maya, you have to sign it! Julian’s father called my father at seven this morning. They’re refusing to sign the marriage certificate until this is resolved! Julian packed his bags and left the hotel because his corporate partners saw that video!"

"And who pushed me, Paige?" I asked, my voice calm, dangerously quiet. The painkillers were kicking in, but my mind was clearer than it had been in years. "Who shoved me while my back was turned?"

"It was a joke!" Paige screamed, tears of sheer entitlement streaming down her cheeks. "It was just a stupid party dare! Why do you always have to make everything about yourself? You got a little bruised, and now you’re destroying my entire future!"

"She didn’t get a little bruised," Ryan barked, pointing a finger directly in Paige’s face. "She had a complete labrum tear, a shattered rotator cuff, and a hairline fracture in her scapula. She will need four months of physical therapy and might never regain full mobility. That is a felony, Paige."

Eleanor lunged forward, trying to grab my good hand to force a pen into it. "Maya, think about the family! If Julian calls off this wedding, the merger between his father’s logistics firm and your father’s supply chain falls through! Do you want your father to lose his business? Do you want to destroy all of us over a bruised ego?"

"You never cared about me," I said, looking Eleanor dead in the eyes. "Not when Paige stole my college fund, not when she drove my car into a ditch and blamed it on me, and not when she pushed me into that pool. You only care about keeping the lie alive."

I took the legal affidavit with my left hand, crumpled it into a tight ball, and threw it directly into the trash bin beside my bed.

"Get out," I said.

Eleanor gasped, her face turning crimson with rage. "You ungrateful, spiteful little—"

Before she could finish, the door swung open again. Two armed hospital security guards stepped into the room, flanked by Detective Martinez, who held a clipboard and a recorder in his hands.

"Eleanor Cole? Paige Cole?" Detective Martinez asked calmly. "You're trespassing in a restricted post-op ward. Step outside immediately. Paige Cole, we have a warrant for your questioning regarding a reported felony battery."

Paige turned pale as ash. She looked at our mother, then at me, her lower lip quivering with genuine terror for the first time in her life.
