Chapter 9 - The Confrontation

The schematics Marcus had stolen were for the state-of-the-art secure data facility my architectural firm had designed for the Department of Defense. It was a multi-million-dollar project that had taken three years of my life. If Marcus sold those blueprints to foreign syndicates, it wouldn't just ruin my life—it would compromise national security.

"Tonight is Friday," Miller said, his face pale as he checked his watch. "It's eleven-fifteen PM. The rail yard is fifteen minutes from here."

"Call SWAT," I urged, grabbing his arm. "We can catch him in the act. We can end this tonight!"

Miller was already keying his radio. "Dispatch, this is Unit 4. We need immediate tactical backup at the North Rail Yard, sector seven. High-value target on site."

We sped through the empty city streets, sirens off to avoid alerting the suspects. Rain began to fall, slicking the asphalt and blurring the streetlights into streaks of neon red and yellow. My mind raced between the warehouse ahead and my daughter sleeping back at the downtown apartment.

*I will end this,* I swore silently. *I will make sure my little girl never has to live in fear again.*

The North Rail Yard was an industrial wasteland of rusted train cars, cracked concrete, and towering floodlights that flickered intermittently. As our cruiser rolled to a halt behind a row of abandoned shipping containers, we spotted a sleek black SUV parked near warehouse twelve.

Two men stood near the open tailgate, their breath fogging in the cold night air. One was tall, dressed in an expensive trench coat—Marcus. The other was a broad-shouldered man carrying a reinforced aluminum briefcase.

"Stay in the car, David," Miller commanded, drawing his service weapon. "Backup is three minutes out."

"I can't just sit here!"

"You have a daughter to raise! Stay down!" Miller hissed, pushing open the driver's door and moving silently through the shadows.

Suddenly, a loud metallic clang echoed across the yard. One of the perimeter guards Marcus had posted stepped out from behind a tanker car, spotting Miller immediately.

"Police! Drop your weapons!" Miller shouted.

Gunfire erupted, shattering the night into chaos.
