Chapter 19 - The Ultimatum

The bunker shook violently as an explosion detonated at the above-ground entrance. Dust and concrete powder rained down from the ceiling, clouding the fluorescent lights.

"They're using shaped charges on the blast doors," Sterling yelled in panic, frantically backing away toward a metal cabinet. "The reinforced steel will only hold for ten minutes at most!"

On the command console, an incoming transmission override cut through the warning alarms. The main monitor flickered, replacing the tactical layout with a live feed of a woman sitting in an austere, high-tech command center. She was in her late fifties, with immaculate silver hair pulled into a severe bun, wearing a tailored charcoal suit. Her eyes were as cold as polished obsidian.

"Dr. Sterling. Agent Vance. And of course... Mr. David Evans," the woman spoke through the speakers, her tone smooth, aristocratic, and utterly devoid of humanity.

"Thorne," Vance hissed, stepping in front of the screen.

"Director Thorne to you, Agent Vance," the woman corrected calmly. "I must commend you, David. You have proven remarkably resilient for an ordinary man who was merely cast as an unwitting foster father. But the theater production is over. Lily belongs to Aethelgard. Her design, her blood, her very consciousness are intellectual property protected by contracts beyond your comprehension."

"She’s an eight-year-old girl!" I roared at the screen, stepping between the camera and Lily’s bed. "She isn't property! She has a soul, she has a life, and she is my daughter!"

Thorne offered a patronizing, chilling smile. "Her biological countdown has entered its critical phase, David. In twenty-four hours, the biological synthesis will kill her unless I administer the stabilization enzyme. Surrender the child to my strike team outside. Walk away, and I will allow you to live. Continue this pathetic charade of fatherhood, and you will watch her die in your arms before my men put a bullet in your head."

"You come and take her yourself, you soulless monster," I snarled, every ounce of fear in my body burning away, replaced by pure, lethal resolve.

Thorne’s expression turned utterly flat. "Execute the breaching protocol. Leave the father alive long enough to watch."

The screen went black.

Above us, the second explosion rattled the bunker, and the screech of tearing metal echoed down the reinforced corridor.
