Chapter 7 - Web of Deceit

By 3:00 AM, the downtown apartment had turned into a tactical command post. Detective Miller sat at the dining table surrounded by laptops, empty coffee cups, and two agents from the financial crimes division.
Marcus hadn't been bluffing.
"He routed three offshore dummy transactions through your corporate consulting firm, David," Special Agent Vance, a sharp-eyed woman with silver-streaked hair, told me. "The money originated from an illegal arms syndicate in Eastern Europe. On paper, it looks like you’ve been laundering funds for them for eighteen months. The IRS just froze all your primary accounts."
"That's absurd!" I shouted, pacing the floor. "I’ve worked eighty hours a week at a clean architectural firm for ten years! Emily managed the domestic bookkeeping!"
"We believe you," Miller interjected, raising his hands to calm me down. "The IP addresses match Emily’s home computer and Marcus’s burner devices. But the legal red tape means your money is locked down until a judge reviews the forensic audit. Marcus has effectively cut off your financial resources. You can't hire private security, you can't book charter flights, you can't disappear."
"He wants me trapped in one place," I realized, the horrifying strategy clicking into place. "He wants me pinned down while he maneuvers."
A soft rustle at the corridor caught my attention. Lily stood in her oversized pajamas, rubbing her eyes with her small fists. She looked terrified by the armed agents standing in the living room.
"Dad?" she whimpered.
I crossed the room in three strides, scooping her up into my arms. "Hey, sweetheart. What's wrong? Did you have a bad dream?"
She buried her face in my neck, trembling. "I heard that man's voice."
My breath froze. Miller and Agent Vance both turned their heads sharply.
"What man, Lily?" I asked, keeping my voice gentle, though my heart was pounding wildly.
"The man from the basement," she whispered, her voice barely audible. "The one Mom said was our secret uncle. He came when you were in Chicago. He made Mom put a metal box under the floorboards in my playhouse in the backyard."
Miller stood up immediately. "The playhouse?"
May you like
Lily nodded against my shoulder. "Mom told me if I ever told you about the silver box, the bad men would take you away and never bring you back. That's why I hid the key in my doll."
