Chapter 18 - The Truth Beneath the Flesh

The underground laboratory was a subterranean labyrinth of humming servers, vintage oscilloscopes, and glass display cases filled with centrifuge tubes. Sterling directed me to lay Lily onto an adjustable examination gurney beneath a cluster of surgical lights.

I held her small, burning hand, rubbing my thumb across her knuckles. "Hang on, sweetheart. Daddy’s right here."

Sterling immediately hooked up a portable monitoring unit, placing sensor pads on Lily’s temples and wrists. The monitor gave off a rapid, irregular series of beeps, displaying genetic sequencing readouts that looked entirely alien to standard human biology.

"Look at this," Sterling whispered in awe and horror, pointing to the monitor screen. "Her DNA was synthesized using an artificial telomere matrix. It was designed to mimic standard human growth until her cells hit the ninth anniversary of cellular activation. At that precise moment, a synthetic endocrine peptide is released, unlocking the encrypted memory core stored within her neural pathways."

"What does that mean in plain English?" I demanded, my patience hanging by a thread.

"It means Lily was created as a living, breathing organic hard drive," Sterling explained grimly. "She carries the complete, unredacted proprietary research of Aethelgard’s synthetic human genome project—worth billions to military and pharmaceutical black markets. Emily and Marcus were supposed to act as caretakers, blending her into society until she was ripe for extraction. But Emily grew greedy. She wanted to sell the key independently."

"And the countdown?" Vance asked, scanning the perimeter monitors linked to outside security cameras.

"If the peptide releases without the extraction counter-agent, the biological stress on her nervous system will cause catastrophic organ failure," Sterling said, looking me dead in the eye. "She has less than thirty hours before her body consumes itself from the inside out."

"Then synthesize the counter-agent!" I slammed my fist on the metal table, rattling the surgical instruments. "You built this damn project, Sterling! Save her!"

"I helped design the delivery mechanism, yes, but I didn't create the synthesis cipher!" Sterling shouted back, his voice trembling. "The master cipher is locked inside the primary research terminal at Aethelgard’s offshore facility—the black site commanded by Director Thorne."

Suddenly, the security console across the room began shrieking a high-pitched alarm.

Vance drew her weapon instantly, rushing to the terminal. "Perimeter breach. Two heavy transport trucks just crashed through the outer gate. They didn't just track us, David... they brought an entire assault company."
