Chapter 9 - WHAT PETER LEFT BEHIND

Daniel pulled the thick envelope out of the safe and brought it under the desk lamp.

Anna approached the desk as if approaching an unexploded bomb. Her hands trembled so violently she could barely open the metal clasp.

Inside were bank statements, handwritten ledgers, sworn affidavits, and an audio cassette tape labeled: *Recording — Vance Boardroom, Nov 14.*

"What is this?" Daniel asked, leaning over the papers.

"Peter discovered it," Anna said, tears welling in her eyes again. "Julian’s father didn't die of natural causes. He had early-stage dementia, and Julian had an offshore lawyer alter the family will while his father was heavily medicated. Peter was the original executor. When Peter refused to file the altered document, Julian threatened to destroy his practice."

Clare’s breath caught. "That was why Peter suddenly retired. He told me he was tired, that the cancer was draining his energy... He stepped down to protect us."

"Julian paid off two partners at Peter's firm to fabricate malpractice claims against him," Anna whispered, looking at Clare with profound sorrow. "Peter took the blow to shield you and your children from the scandal. But he never destroyed the original documents. He kept the certified copies right here."

"This isn't just about Maya's trust," Daniel said, his eyes scanning the affidavits. "This is criminal fraud. Wire fraud. Extortion. Julian Vance isn't just trying to get his daughter back—he’s hunting you because you have access to the only evidence that can send him to prison for fifteen years."

A soft creak on the floorboards made all three of them turn around.

Maya stood in the doorway, wearing an oversized pair of Sophie's old wool socks, clutching her water-damaged notebook.

"Mum?" Maya asked in a small voice. "Are the bad men coming?"

Clare walked over, knelt down, and took Maya’s small, cold hands in hers. "No, sweetheart. Not tonight. Tonight is Christmas, and bad men don't get past my front door."

"Look," Maya said, opening her notebook and turning it toward Clare. "I drew a picture of our dinner. That’s you. That’s Mum. That’s me with my hot chocolate. And those are the two empty chairs that waited for us."

Clare looked down at the childish crayon drawing. Two figures sat at a long table beneath five bright yellow stars, and between them were empty spaces drawn with golden light.

A tear slipped down Clare's cheek. She pulled Maya into a warm hug. "It’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen, darling."

Suddenly, the house was plunged into pitch blackness.

The hum of the Aga faltered. The ticking clock fell silent. Outside, the security lights went dead.
