Chapter 14 - THE EMPTY CHAIRS FILLED

Christmas morning broke over the village in a blinding blaze of white and gold. The blizzard had ceased, leaving three feet of undisturbed snow draping the rolling hills like velvet.

Inside the Bennett home, the kitchen was alive with the sound of frying bacon, sizzling sausages, and the clatter of silver.

Clare stood at the head of the long oak dining table. For thirty-five years, she had dressed this table with the white linen cloth, the silver napkin rings, and the crystal glasses Peter had bought for their wedding.

Today, every single chair was filled.

Daniel sat on the left, his arm in a sling from his scuffle, laughing as Maya used a felt-tip pen to draw a Christmas tree on his white bandage.

Sophie sat beside Maya, cutting up fresh melon and sharing stories from the night shift that made Anna laugh—a clear, ringing sound that filled the high-ceilinged room with music it hadn't heard in years.

At the other end of the table sat Thomas Bennett, his radio murmuring low from his belt, enjoying the best fried breakfast in the county.

And in the middle, looking radiant in a clean wool sweater Clare had loaned her, sat Anna. Her hands weren't shaking anymore. When she caught Clare’s eye, she raised her glass of orange juice in a silent, profound toast of gratitude.

Clare looked down at the fifth chair—the one Peter used to sit in. On the cloth beside his plate rested the silver swallow pendant. Anna had placed it there earlier, whispering: *"He set us free, Clare. He deserves to have it back."*

Clare felt a warmth spread through her chest that defied the freezing world outside. She had thought she was sitting at an abandoned table, forgotten by the world she had spent her life serving. She had thought the empty chairs were an indictment of her worth.

Now she understood.

Those chairs had not been abandoned. They had been kept empty for a purpose. They were waiting for the lost, the broken, and the brave.

"Mum?" Daniel called out, looking up from his decorated cast. "Aren't you going to sit down? The food's getting cold."

May you like

"I am, darling," Clare said with a soft, steady smile. "I am."
