Chapter 17 - THE LAW FIRM IN LONDON

Three days after Christmas, an immaculate black saloon car pulled up the gravel driveway.

Out stepped a woman in her late forties, dressed in a sharp charcoal wool coat, carrying an embossed leather briefcase. She looked up at the stone house, adjusted her glasses, and walked with brisk, confident strides toward the front door.

Daniel answered. "Can I help you?"

"My name is Eleanor Cross," the woman said, extending a gloved hand. "I am the senior managing partner at Cross, Sterling & Bennett in London. I believe your mother is expecting me."

Daniel led her into the study, where Clare, Anna, and DI Thomas Bennett were already seated around Peter's old mahogany desk.

Eleanor Cross paused in the doorway, her gaze sweeping over the familiar bookshelves, the ticking French clock, and finally settling on Clare. A flicker of deep emotion passed over her composed face.

"Clare," Eleanor said, stepping forward and taking Clare’s hands in both of hers. "It has been far too long."

"Eleanor," Clare replied warmly. "Thank you for coming all this way."

Eleanor sat down, unclasped her briefcase, and laid a series of red-bound legal folders onto the desk. "When Thomas called me on Christmas night with the inventory of Peter’s safe, I didn't sleep for twenty-four hours. We spent yesterday reviewing the original partnership agreements Julian Vance forced Peter to sign."

Anna leaned forward, her heart in her throat. "Is the trust valid?"

"Valid?" Eleanor gave a sharp, triumphant laugh that made Maya look up from her coloring book. "My dear Anna, it’s far more than valid. Peter didn't just protect you—he outmaneuvered Julian at every turn. When Julian attempted to forge his father’s will, Peter had already placed the Vance family properties into an irrevocable custodial trust with Maya as the primary beneficiary and *you* as the sole executor upon Peter's death."

Anna gasped, tears instantly springing to her eyes. "I... I don't understand."

"Julian has no legal standing," Eleanor said firmly. "None. He spent the last three years intimidating you because he knew that if you ever found an honest lawyer with Peter's original seals, his entire financial empire would crumble. Yesterday afternoon, the High Court issued an emergency injunction freezing all of Julian Vance's personal and corporate assets pending criminal investigation."

"And the custody order?" Anna choked out, her hands clutching Clare’s sleeve. "The order saying I was unfit?"

Eleanor pulled a certified document stamped with the royal crest from her folder and slid it across the desk.

"Signed this morning by Mr. Justice Thornton," Eleanor said softly. "The previous order has been vacated for fraud. You have sole, permanent legal and physical custody of Maya. Julian Vance is barred from approaching within one mile of either of you for the remainder of his life."

Anna stared at the paper. She didn't scream or celebrate. She simply pressed her face into her hands and wept—deep, cleansing sobs that seemed to wash away years of terror, cold park benches, and running in the dark.

Clare wrapped her arms around the young mother, holding her tight, feeling Anna’s tears soak into the shoulder of her green wool dress.
