Chapter 20 - THE TABLE BY THE FIRE

At 11:58 PM, the grandfather clock in the hallway began its deep, resonant chime, counting down the final seconds of the year that had broken Clare Bennett’s heart, only to rebuild it out of stone and fire.

The living room was illuminated solely by the fireplace and the twinkling lights of the Christmas tree.

Anna sat on the sofa beside Sophie, looking through family albums, pointing at pictures of Peter and laughing at his terrible 1980s haircuts. Daniel sat on the floor, letting Maya braid pieces of colorful yarn into his hair while the golden retriever slept heavily across his feet.

Clare stood by the archway, holding a glass of champagne, taking in the scene.

She remembered the silence of Christmas Eve at 6:43. She remembered the suffocating weight of Peter’s empty study, the hollow echo of her footsteps on the stairs, the quiet terror of believing that her usefulness in this world had come to an end.

She had thought her life was a book that was closing. She had not realized it was merely the end of the preface.

"Ten! Nine! Eight!" Daniel and Maya began to shout, counting down with the radio broadcast from London.

Anna looked up, catching Clare’s gaze across the room. Her eyes were bright, clear, and brimming with a love that had no fear left in it.

"Seven! Six! Five!"

Sophie threw her arm around Anna’s shoulders, pulling her into the circle.

"Four! Three! Two! One!"

"HAPPY NEW YEAR!"

Maya leaped up, running across the rug and throwing her small arms around Clare’s waist, burying her face into Clare’s skirt.

"Happy New Year, Clare!" the little girl cried.

Clare knelt down, gathering Maya into her arms, kissing her soft curls. "Happy New Year, Maya. Welcome home."

Outside, church bells across the valley began to peal, their deep bronze voices carrying over the snow-covered fields, proclaiming light in the middle of winter, safety in the teeth of the gale, and a family that had found each other when the chairs were almost packed away.
