Chapter 9 - The Settlement

Six months later.

The final divorce decree between Claire Vance and Ethan Cole was signed in a quiet probate office in downtown San Francisco.

Under the final court-ratified terms:

Claire was granted permanent, sole legal and physical custody of Lily.

The remaining liquid proceeds from the sale of the Harbor Ridge marital home—totaling one point eight million dollars—were placed into an irrevocable educational trust managed solely by Claire for Lily’s future college and life funds.

Ethan was ordered to pay a nominal monthly child support amount based on his low wages as a building manager, along with mandatory weekly anger-management and parental rehabilitation therapy sessions if he ever wished to upgrade his supervised visitation status.

Ethan signed the papers in complete silence, sitting beside a court-appointed public attorney. He didn't look up when Claire stood to leave. He knew his words no longer carried any weight in her world.

Outside the courthouse, the autumn afternoon was bright and warm.

Clara Sterling walked alongside Claire down the marble steps.

"It’s over, Claire," Clara said with a warm smile, handing her the sealed gold-embossed final decree folder. "You are officially a free woman."

Claire held the folder against her chest. She looked up at the deep blue California sky, feeling an incredible, weightless lightness spread through her chest.

Her phone rang. It was Daniel.

"Hey," Daniel’s warm voice filled the line. "How did it go?"

"It’s signed," Claire said, a bright laugh escaping her lips. "It’s completely finished."

"Good," Daniel said, his tone shifting into one of lighthearted excitement. "Because Lily and I are standing in front of the new blueprints for the Vance Architecture Studio in downtown Carmel, and we can't decide whether the front door should be painted blue or green."

Claire’s heart swelled with happiness.

Three months ago, Claire had officially launched her own independent firm: Vance Structural Restoration Studio. Her first commercial project—a multi-million dollar preservation contract for the historic Monterey Bay Civic Center—had been signed last week.

"Tell Lily we're painting it ocean blue," Claire said, stepping into a waiting taxi. "I'll be there in twenty minutes."
