Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Harbor Ridge

The loss of temporary custody was only the first domino to fall.

Two months after the initial court hearing, the winter cold had set in across Northern California.

Inside the sleek headquarters of Harbor Ridge Development in downtown San Francisco, chaos reigned.

Ethan stood in his corner office, surrounded by cardboard moving boxes. The company's lead forensic accountant, an elderly man named Howard Gable, sat across from him with a red pen.

"It’s over, Ethan," Howard said flatly. "When the family court ordered a full disclosure of your personal and corporate assets, your hidden offshore accounts in Nevis were uncovered."

Ethan squeezed his eyes shut. "Those accounts were for marketing expenditures!"

"Those accounts were used to pay Jenna Vale seven hundred thousand dollars in unrecorded 'consulting fees' over twelve months," Howard corrected harshly. "The IRS has flagged it as tax fraud. The board of directors held an emergency meeting an hour ago. You have been officially removed as Chief Executive Officer."

Ethan stared at his accountant in disbelief. "They can't fire me! I founded this company!"

"They can, and they did," Howard said, standing up and pulling his coat on. "The board appointed an interim receiver to liquidate the remaining assets to cover the bank debts. You have until five o'clock to clear your desk."

The heavy glass door opened. Jenna Vale walked in, carrying a designer leather handbag.

Ethan looked up, a faint ray of hope touching his eyes. "Jenna... thank God. Did you talk to the public relations team? Can we draft a statement?"

Jenna looked at Ethan, her eyes cool, detached, and completely empty of affection.

"I’m not here to draft a statement, Ethan," Jenna said quietly, pulling a sealed envelope from her bag and dropping it onto his desk. "I’m handing in my formal legal severance. My attorney advised me to sever all professional associations with you before the IRS indictments are filed."

Ethan stared at the envelope, then up at her. "Severance? Jenna... I lost my marriage for you! I lost my daughter! I spent almost a million dollars on your luxury apartments, your clothes, your trips!"

"You didn't do any of that for me, Ethan," Jenna said with a cold, mocking laugh. "You did it for your own ego. You liked having a young, attractive woman on your arm at corporate dinners because it made you feel powerful. But you're not powerful anymore, Ethan. You're broke, you're under federal investigation, and you're pathetic."

She turned on her heel and walked out of the office, her high heels clicking loudly against the hardwood floor.

Ethan stood alone in his massive, empty office. The glass walls reflected a broken, aging man in a rumpled suit.

He looked out the window toward the bay. In the far distance, perched majestically on the cliffs of Carmel, the warm golden lights of Crescent Bluff Hotel shone brightly against the dark evening sky.
