Chapter 5 - The Legal Battle Begins

Three weeks later.
The family court building in downtown San Francisco was gray, imposing, and cold.
Ethan Cole sat at the plaintiff table, flanked by two high-priced, aggressive divorce attorneys led by Richard Thorne—a man famous for destroying women in high-asset divorces.
Across the aisle sat Claire, calm and composed in a beige silk blouse, accompanied by her attorney, Clara Vance-Sterling.
Ethan looked terrible. Dark circles shadowed his hollow cheeks. Harbor Ridge Development was teetering on the edge of insolvency after two major investors pulled out following the publicity of the failed Crescent Bluff deal. Jenna Vale had quietly resigned from her consultancy position three days earlier when Ethan’s credit lines were frozen.
"Your Honor," Richard Thorne announced to the judge, standing tall and throwing his hands wide. "My client, Mr. Ethan Cole, is a dedicated, hard-working father who provided a luxury lifestyle for his family for a decade. Mrs. Cole suddenly abandoned the marital home, took their nine-year-old daughter to an undisclosed location, and systematically engaged in corporate sabotage to destroy my client's business!"
Thorne dropped a stack of papers onto the judge’s bench.
"We are petitioning for immediate full physical custody of Lily Cole, exclusive possession of the marital estate, and a court-ordered psychological evaluation of Mrs. Cole!"
The judge, a sharp-eyed woman named Justice Evelyn Mercer, reviewed the documents with an unreadable face. She then turned her gaze toward Claire’s side.
"Mrs. Sterling?" Judge Mercer asked.
Clara Sterling stood up smoothly. She placed a single sleek flash drive onto the evidence desk.
"Your Honor," Clara began, her voice crisp and completely devoid of emotion. "We have submitted video evidence from the security system of Crescent Bluff Hotel from the night of October 14th."
Ethan’s jaw dropped. "What security video?"
"The video recording from the corridor of the Presidential Suite," Clara continued calmly. "It clearly captures Mr. Cole standing in the doorway of his suite, accompanied by his mistress, instructing his nine-year-old daughter—who was carrying her backpack in the rain—that she was an inconvenience and ordering her mother to take her somewhere else tonight."
The court reporter’s fingers flew across the keyboard.
"We have also submitted audio logs," Clara added, "showing that Mr. Cole subsequently revoked his daughter's room access credentials, effectively attempting to leave a minor child homeless on a stormy night to protect his private romantic liaison."
Judge Mercer’s face turned into a wall of solid ice. She looked down from her bench directly at Ethan.
"Mr. Cole," Judge Mercer said, her voice dropping into a dangerous, quiet register. "Is this accurate?"
Ethan stammered, his face burning bright red. "Your Honor... context is important! I was conducting high-stakes business negotiations—"
"You threw a nine-year-old child out of a hotel room on a stormy night for 'business negotiations'?" Judge Mercer interrupted sharply.
"She had her mother with her!" Ethan yelled, losing his composure completely. "Claire deliberately showed up early to create a scene!"
"Silence, Mr. Cole!" Judge Mercer slammed her gavel down with a crack that echoed off the high ceiling.
She looked down at her papers, writing rapidly with a heavy black pen.
"Pending trial," Judge Mercer ruled, "Mrs. Claire Vance is awarded sole temporary physical and legal custody of Lily Cole. Mr. Cole will have supervised visitation rights every second Saturday for two hours at a court-designated facility."
"Supervised?!" Ethan screamed, standing up from his chair. "I am a multi-millionaire! I built Harbor Ridge!"
"Mr. Cole, if you yell in my courtroom again, you will spend the night in a county jail cell," Judge Mercer warned coldly. "Furthermore, Mr. Cole is ordered to pay thirty thousand dollars monthly in temporary child support and spousal maintenance, effective immediately. Court adjourned."
Ethan fell back into his leather chair as the judge exited the room.
Claire stood up, buttoned her jacket, and packed her notepad.
As she passed Ethan’s table, he grabbed the edge of his chair, staring up at her with frantic, desperate eyes.
"Claire..." Ethan croaked out, his voice breaking. "You're taking my daughter away from me?"
May you like
Claire stopped and looked down at him.
"I didn't take her away, Ethan," Claire whispered softly. "You chose Jenna and a hotel room over her three weeks ago. I'm just making sure she never has to wait in the hallway again."
