Chapter 10 - The House on the Cliff

One year later.

The golden light of late summer bathed the northern headlands of Crescent Bluff.

Perched on a gentle green slope overlooking the shimmering Pacific Ocean stood a breathtaking modern farmhouse lodge. Its structure was a magnificent blend of historic hand-carved stone, floor-to-ceiling glass, and warm cedar wood—designed and built entirely by Claire Vance.

In the backyard, a high wooden swing set swayed gently in the sea breeze.

Ten-year-old Lily was swinging high into the air, her bright laughter mixing with the sound of the crashing waves below.

Standing near the wooden porch, tending to a large garden of blooming white hydrangeas and lavender, was Claire.

She wore a comfortable cream linen dress, her dark hair glowing in the afternoon light. Her face showed no trace of the pale, exhausted woman who had stood in a hotel hallway two years ago. Her eyes were bright, clear, and serene.

A pair of warm, strong arms wrapped gently around her waist from behind.

Daniel Brooks leaned down, resting his chin comfortably on her shoulder, pressing a soft kiss against her neck.

"What are you thinking about, beautiful?" Daniel murmured softly.

Claire leaned back against his broad chest, holding his hands over her stomach.

"I was thinking about stress loads," Claire said with a soft chuckle.

Daniel smiled, turning her around in his arms so he could look into her shining eyes. "Architectural stress loads?"

"Life stress loads," Claire corrected gently, reaching up to gently touch his cheek. "I spent so many years trying to keep a broken structure from falling apart. I thought if I just tried harder, if I remained quiet enough, the cracks would fix themselves."

Daniel looked at her with deep, unyielding devotion. He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a simple, elegant rose-gold band set with a single brilliant-cut diamond.

"Then build something new with me, Claire," Daniel said, his voice deep and thick with raw emotion as he looked into her eyes. "A structure built on stone. Built on truth. Built to last forever."

Claire looked at the ring, then up into Daniel’s eyes.

She saw no deceit. No performance. No corporate calculation. She saw only a good, honorable man who loved her daughter as his own and loved her with his whole soul.

Tears of pure happiness welled in Claire’s eyes as she smiled—a radiant, stunning smile that lit up the whole coast.

"Yes," Claire whispered. "Yes, Daniel. Absolutely yes."

From the swing set across the lawn, Lily saw them embracing. She jumped off the swing, running across the green grass toward them, her face beaming with joy.

"Did you say yes, Mommy?!" Lily squealed, throwing her arms around both of them.

Daniel picked Lily up in one arm while holding Claire close with the other, bringing the three of them into one warm, tight embrace under the golden California sun.

Far below them, the ocean waves smashed against the ancient rocks of the coast—strong, eternal, and unbroken.

Claire looked out at the vast horizon, her heart completely whole, knowing that no storm could ever shake the foundation of the life she had built.
