Chapter 7 - The Shadow of the Past

While the city celebrated the announcement of Marco Lombardi and Donatella Greco’s engagement, dark currents were still moving beneath the surface.
In a high-security federal holding facility on the outskirts of Detroit, Leo Rossi sat in a cold interrogation room. His clothes were gray prison scrubs, his cheeks were hollow, and his arrogance was entirely gone.
Sitting across from him was a man in a sharp blue suit—Special Agent Vance of the FBI’s Organized Crime Division.
“Let’s review the deal again, Leo,” Agent Vance said, leaning over the metal table. “You give us the secondary decryption keys to Marco Lombardi’s private accounts, and we drop the co-conspirator arson charges against you. You walk away with full immunity.”
Leo swallowed hard, his hands trembling in his lap. “I don't have the keys. I told you, Donatella was the one who managed the encryption! She kept all the master codes on a physical hardware drive!”
Agent Vance’s eyes narrowed. “Where is that drive?”
“It was in our old apartment,” Leo stammered, his eyes wide with desperate survival instincts. “In the wall safe behind the closet mirror. She thinks I don't know the combination, but I watched her enter it once three years ago!”
Agent Vance smiled slowly. “If those keys can link Marco Lombardi to international money laundering, Donatella Greco goes down with him as his CFO.”
Leo hesitated for a brief second. A flash of guilt washed over him. Donatella had given him three years of unconditional love. She had saved his life a dozens of times.
But Leo was a selfish man to his core.
“Take the drive,” Leo whispered, his voice shaking. “Just make sure I get immunity.”
Two hours later.
The Lombardi estate was quiet. Rain tapped rhythmically against the glass windows of the library.
Donatella sat at her mahogany desk, reviewing the final merger documents for the port expansion, when her phone buzzed.
It was an automated security alert from her old condo in downtown Detroit.
Motion detected: Master Bedroom Safe.
Donatella’s eyes narrowed. The condo was locked, listed for sale, and monitored by a third-party digital security grid she had designed herself.
She quickly pulled up the live security feed on her laptop.
On the screen, two men in tactical gear were using a specialized electronic reader to breach the wall safe behind her old closet mirror.
Donatella didn't panic. She watched as one of the men pulled out a small, metallic silver USB drive from the back of the safe.
“The decoy drive,” Donatella murmured to herself, a cold smile touching her lips.
She picked up her phone and dialed Marco’s direct line.
“Marco,” she said as soon as he answered.
“I’m ten minutes away from the estate, darling,” Marco’s warm voice came through the speaker. “Everything okay?”
“The FBI just breached my old apartment and stole the secondary ledger drive,” Donatella said smoothly.
A brief silence followed on the line, followed by Marco’s low, rumbling chuckle.
“The drive you infected with the Trojan virus three weeks ago?” Marco asked.
“The very same,” Donatella replied. “The moment they plug that drive into the FBI’s central server to read the files, it will overwrite their internal evidence logs with Arthur Shaw’s full financial confession—and automatically delete every pending charge against Rossi Holdings’ legitimate assets, transferring ownership directly into my personal trust.”
“You are terrifying, my love,” Marco said, his tone thick with deep admiration. “I’m coming home right now. We have a wedding to plan, and I don't want government agency drama interfering with our cake tasting.”

Donatella laughed, feeling a profound sense of peace.
She closed her laptop, walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, and looked out over Lake St. Clair. The storm outside was fierce, but inside the glass fortress, she was completely warm, safe, and powerful.
