Chapter 2 - The Contract of Whispers

Donatella stepped back, creating a deliberate foot of space between herself and Marco Lombardi. Her mind was racing.
“You bought Rossi Holdings’ debt?” she asked, her voice sharp with analytical skepticism. “That was supposed to be protected by an offshore trust in the Cayman Islands.”
Marco smiled, a slow, appreciative curve of his lips. “It was protected. Until three days ago, when an anonymous source sent me a cryptographic key decrypting the Rossi family’s secondary ledgers. It took me twelve hours to purchase their liabilities from the Zurich creditors.”
Donatella blinked. “You knew about their financial instability before today.”
“I knew Leo Rossi was a hollow shell living off his father’s reputation,” Marco said smoothly. He walked over to the walnut table and picked up her portfolio, flipping through her meticulously organized pages. “And I knew that the real brilliance behind the Rossi growth over the past three years wasn't Leo. It was you.”
Donatella felt a strange warmth spread through her chest. For three years, she had survived on breadcrumbs of validation from Leo, who had constantly minimized her contributions to shield his own fragile ego. To hear the most feared businessman in Detroit acknowledge her worth in ten seconds felt overwhelming.
“That still doesn’t explain why you kissed me,” Donatella said, crossing her arms over her charcoal skirt. “Or why you publicly humiliated Leo.”
“Leo humiliated himself the moment he brought a child to an adult’s table,” Marco said softly, stepping toward her again. The dark intensity in his gaze made her heart skip a beat. “As for the kiss... consider it an advance on our new partnership.”
“Partnership?”
Marco tapped the file on page seventeen. “I’m taking over the entire Rossi ecosystem. But I don’t want their trucking lines or their rusty warehouses. I want their asset management division. And I want you to run it. As Chief Financial Officer of Lombardi Enterprises.”
Donatella stared at him. CFO of Lombardi Enterprises was a position that commanded influence across three states. It was a role that would instantly catapult her into the upper atmosphere of corporate power.
“Why me?” she asked quietly. “You could hire anyone from Wall Street.”
“Wall Street is filled with men like Leo—arrogant boys who read spreadsheets and think they understand power,” Marco said, his voice dropping into a intimate growl. “I don't need a spreadsheet reader, Donatella. I need someone who sees the trap before it’s sprung. Someone who has the courage to look me in the eye and tell me when I’m wrong.”
He stepped closer, reaching into his suit jacket to pull out a silver fountain pen and a single page of heavy ivory paper.
“Five million dollar base salary,” Marco said, placing the paper on the table. “Ten percent equity in the restructured acquisition. Complete autonomy over your team. And a personal security detail.”
Donatella looked at the contract, her jaw slightly slack. It was more money than she had ever dreamed of making. It was freedom.
“What’s the catch?” she asked.
Marco’s dark eyes flashed with an unreadable emotion. “The catch is that Leo and Arthur Shaw will not take this quietly. Shaw controls the port union leaders. Leo has friends in dirty places. By walking out of this room as my CFO, you are stepping onto a battlefield.”
“I’ve been on a battlefield for three years, Mr. Lombardi,” Donatella said, her eyes narrowing with sudden fire. “The only difference was that I was fighting for a man who used me as a shield.”
Marco chuckled, a low, rumbling sound that thrilled her. “Then sign it, Donatella. Let’s burn their world down together.”
Donatella didn't hesitate. She picked up the silver pen and signed her name at the bottom of the ivory paper in bold, fluid strokes.
As she capped the pen, Marco leaned in. His eyes drifted down to her lips, then back to her eyes.
“One more thing,” Marco murmured.
“What?”
“When we are alone,” Marco said, his thumb lightly brushing the inner curve of her wrist, sending electric shocks straight up her arm, “you call me Marco.”
Before Donatella could respond, the heavy mahogany doors burst open.
Marco’s head of security, a towering man named Cassian with a scar cutting across his left eyebrow, hurried into the room.
“Don Marco,” Cassian said urgently, his hand resting on his jacket. “We have a problem downstairs. Arthur Shaw’s men just pulled up to the private valet garage. And Leo Rossi is with them.”
Donatella’s body went tense. But Marco didn't even flinch. He slowly fastened the bottom button of his suit jacket and turned to Donatella, extending his arm toward her.
“Shall we go meet our new enemies, CFO Greco?” Marco asked with a dark, breathtaking smile.
Donatella looked at his offered arm. Three hours ago, she was a quiet woman getting publicly fired by her toxic ex-fiancé. Now, she was standing beside the king of Detroit’s underworld.

She placed her hand over his forearm, feeling the rock-hard muscle underneath.
“Lead the way, Marco,” she said.
