Chapter 9 - The Reckoning

Downstairs, the grand ballroom of the estate was filled with the city’s elite. Mayors, judges, high-ranking business leaders, and reformed captains of the Moretti organization mingled under the glittering crystal chandeliers.
As Adrian and I descended the grand marble staircase hand in hand, the entire room fell into a respectful, awe-inspired silence.
The whisper spread through the crowd like wildfire: *The Boss and his Queen.*
They didn't look at me as an outsider anymore. They didn't see a fragile forensic auditor who had accidentally stumbled into a den of wolves. They saw the woman who had brought down Don Carlo, outmaneuvered the Valenti syndicate, and captured the heart of the most ruthless man in Chicago.
Matteo stood at the bottom of the stairs, raising a glass of vintage champagne toward us with a warm, triumphant grin.
Adrian led me to the center of the ballroom. He raised his hand, and the soft classical music faded into silence.
“Friends, colleagues, and distinguished guests,” Adrian’s commanding voice resonated through the hall, captivating every person present. “Twelve years ago, this city was defined by greed, betrayal, and violence that tore families apart. Tonight, we stand on the threshold of a new era.”
He turned to me, his dark eyes shining with unfiltered love and pride.
“This foundation was built on the legacy of a man who believed that honor was worth dying for: Roberto Russo,” Adrian continued, his voice ringing with absolute conviction. “And tonight, his legacy lives on through his daughter, Elena. The woman who holds the future of this empire in her hands.”
The room erupted into thunderous, standing applause.

I looked out at the sea of faces, feeling the warm weight of Adrian’s hand holding mine. I could almost feel my father standing beside me, his hand resting gently on my shoulder, whispering that it was finally time to let go of the pain and embrace the light.
