Chapter 8 - Vengeance and Fire

Three months later.

The Chicago skyline was illuminated by a brilliant summer sunset, casting shades of gold and deep purple across the waters of Lake Michigan.

The Moretti estate had been completely restored. The shattered windows were replaced with reinforced ballistic glass, the courtyard was pristine, and the private dining room where this journey had begun was now set for an elegant celebration.

I stood in front of the full-length mirror in the master bedroom, smoothing down the fabric of an emerald-green silk evening gown. The color brought out the highlights in my dark hair, which was styled in soft waves over my shoulders. On my left wrist, gleaming against the green silk, was my father’s silver bracelet.

And on my left ring finger was a flawless, five-carat black diamond ring.

The door clicked open, and Adrian walked in, wearing a tailored midnight-blue tuxedo that fit his broad shoulders to perfection. He looked entirely healed, the scars from that fateful night hidden beneath fine Italian wool.

He stopped behind me, his eyes drinking in my reflection with a look of fierce, intoxicating hunger.

“You look breathtaking,” he murmured, his large hands resting gently on my hips, pulling me back against his chest.

I smiled, turning in his arms to loop my hands around his neck. “You don't clean up too badly yourself, Mr. Moretti.”

Adrian laughed softly, leaning down to press a warm, lingering kiss against the crook of my neck. “Are you ready for tonight?”

Tonight was the annual charity gala of the Moretti Foundation—a legitimate philanthropic organization we had restructured over the last ninety days. Using the eighteen million recovered from the frozen offshore accounts, we had established a fund dedicated to providing legal aid, protection, and educational scholarships for the families of victims caught in organized crime.

We hadn't just cleaned up the Moretti family’s legitimate business holdings; we were actively transforming them into an institution of genuine power and protection.

“I’m ready,” I said, looking into his dark, smoldering eyes. “Is the council behaving?”

Adrian’s lips twitched into a dangerous smile. “The council knows who makes the decisions in this city now. After Matteo presented the quarterly reports this morning, there wasn't a single objection. They know that crossing you is far more dangerous than crossing me.”

“Good,” I said with a teasing smirk. “I like having a reputation.”

Adrian chuckled, capturing my lips in a slow, possessive kiss that left me breathless. When he pulled back, his eyes were filled with an emotion so deep, so profound, that it made my heart ache with happiness.

“Thank you,” Adrian whispered, resting his forehead against mine.

“For what?”

“For giving me a reason to build something worth saving,” he said softly. “Before you walked into that dining room three months ago, I was just a ghost running an army of shadows. You brought me back to life, Elena.”

May you like

“We saved each other, Adrian,” I replied, touching his cheek.
