Chapter 7 - The Trap Sprung

The private medical wing of the Moretti estate was bathed in sterile, white light.
I sat in an armchair beside Adrian’s bed, my eyes burning from exhaustion. It had been fourteen hours since the battle at Pier 42. Adrian’s personal surgeon had removed the bullet from his shoulder, repaired the muscle tissue, and pumped him full of fluids and antibiotics.
The surgeon had assured me that Adrian would make a full recovery—the Kevlar vest had absorbed most of the kinetic force, preventing the bullet from penetrating deeper into his chest.
I looked at him as he slept. Stripped of his weapons, his tailored suits, and his terrifying aura of authority, he looked remarkably peaceful. The hard lines of his jaw were relaxed, his dark hair falling across his forehead.
I touched the silver bracelet on my wrist, feeling a strange, profound sense of closure. For the first time in twelve years, the suffocating ghost of my father’s murder wasn't haunting my every waking thought. The man responsible was in federal custody, facing twenty consecutive life sentences without parole.
The door to the private room opened softly, and Matteo walked in carrying a steaming cup of coffee.
“You should drink this,” Matteo said quietly, handing me the cup. “You haven't slept in thirty-six hours, Miss Russo.”
“I’m fine, Matteo. Thank you,” I said, taking a sip of the bitter, hot liquid. “What’s the status outside?”
“The city is quiet,” Matteo replied, a look of profound respect in his eyes. “Sal Valenti pulled all his crews out of Chicago by sunrise. He sent an emissary two hours ago offering a complete non-aggression pact. The Moretti family controls the entire logistics corridor now. And the federal task force received your digital package. Don Carlo’s arrest was announced on the morning news. The entire syndicate knows: Adrian Moretti is the undisputed king of Chicago.”
Matteo paused, looking at me with a faint smile. “And everyone knows who the woman standing beside him is.”
Before I could respond, a low, gravelly groan came from the bed.
Adrian stirred. His dark eyes flickered open, blinking against the harsh fluorescent light, before immediately scanning the room until they landed on me.
The tension in his broad frame instantly evaporated.
“You’re still here,” he murmured, his voice raspy and dry.
I set the coffee down and immediately moved to his bedside, gently taking his right hand in mine. “Where else would I be?”
Adrian looked down at our joined hands, his fingers curling tightly around mine. A faint smirk touched his lips. “I thought you’d be halfway to a federal witness protection program by now.”
“I don't need witness protection, Adrian,” I said softly, leaning closer. “The man who protects me is lying right here in this bed.”
Matteo cleared his throat with a knowing grin. “I’ll leave you two alone. Call if you need anything, Boss.”
Matteo slipped out the door, closing it softly behind him.
Adrian shifted, wincing slightly as he pulled himself up against the pillows with his uninjured arm. He looked at me with an intensity that made the breath catch in my throat.
“Come here,” he whispered.
I leaned in, and Adrian reached out, his hand sliding behind my neck, pulling me down until my lips were inches from his.
“You saved my life twice tonight, Elena,” he murmured, his thumb brushing over my lower lip. “You took down an entire criminal conspiracy with a laptop and a silver bracelet.”
“We took them down together,” I whispered.
“Then stay with me,” Adrian said, his voice dropping into a desperate, passionate rumble. “Don't go back to auditing gray cubicles for the government. Stay here. Run this empire with me. Be my partner. Be my queen.”
My heart hammered violently against my ribs. “Adrian... your world is dangerous. It’s filled with violence, enemies, and blood.”
“And I will burn the entire world to the ground before I ever let a single scratch touch you,” Adrian swore, his dark eyes burning with absolute, unwavering devotion. “You are the only truth I have ever known in a life full of lies, Elena. I love you. I think I’ve loved you since the night I made that promise to your father.”
Tears welled in my eyes, but this time, they were tears of pure, overwhelming joy. For twelve years, I had lived in isolation, building walls around my heart to protect myself from the pain of loss. But standing in front of Adrian, every single wall had been completely dismantled.
“I love you too, Adrian,” I whispered.
May you like
Adrian pulled me down, and his lips met mine in a deep, searing kiss that sealed our fates forever. It was a promise forged in fire, blood, and redemption.
