Chapter 3 - Ambush in the Dark

The night was far from over.

Adrian insisted that I remain in his private penthouse, declaring the rest of the city an active combat zone. I had protested, arguing that I had an apartment, a life, and federal contacts who could put me into protective custody.

Adrian had merely looked at me with a dark, mocking grin. “Elena, the Valentis own half the federal marshals in this district. You walk into a safehouse, you walk into a body bag. You stay here. With me.”

His logic was unassailable, and the cold authority in his voice left no room for debate.

By 3:00 AM, the penthouse was quiet. Adrian was locked in his private office, barking orders to his capos over encrypted lines, coordinating the lockdown of all Moretti shipping hubs. Matteo had brought me a change of clothes—an oversized, impossibly soft cashmere sweater that smelled distinctly of Adrian’s cedarwood cologne, and a pair of dark leggings.

I stood by the floor-to-ceiling windows, staring out over the black waters of Lake Michigan. The city looked peaceful from this height, an illusion of order hiding a vicious underworld.

“You should sleep,” Adrian’s deep voice rumbled from behind me.

I turned. He had discarded his suit jacket and tie, unbuttoning the top three buttons of his white shirt, rolling the sleeves up to reveal muscular, vein-corded forearms marked by old, faded scars. He held a thick file folder in his hand.

“I don't think sleep is on the agenda tonight,” I said, crossing my arms over my chest.

Adrian leaned against the back of a leather couch, watching me. “You look better in my clothes than you did in that audit room.”

I felt a sudden heat rise in my cheeks. “Are you always this inappropriate with your consultants?”

“You stopped being my consultant the moment you slapped my brother,” he replied, a slow smirk spreading across his handsome face. “Right now, you are the most dangerous person in this city. You hold the financial records that can put my uncle and the entire Valenti family behind bars—or six feet under.”

He tapped the file in his hand. “This is the complete dossier on your father’s final audit. I kept it locked in my private safe for twelve years. I thought you had a right to read it.”

My breath hitched. I stepped forward, taking the heavy folder from his hands. As my fingers brushed against his, Adrian didn't pull away. Instead, he wrapped his fingers around my wrist, his thumb resting against the rhythmic pulse beating beneath my skin.

“You’ve carried this weight alone for a very long time,” he murmured, his gaze dropping to my eyes, soft and devastatingly intense.

“I didn't have a choice,” I whispered. “When they killed him, everyone turned their backs on me. The police stopped answering my calls. My father’s friends vanished. I learned that the only person who was ever going to fight for Roberto Russo was me.”

“You’re not alone anymore, Elena,” Adrian said, his voice dropping an octave, rich with an unspoken promise. “From this moment on, anyone who threatens you answers to me. Do you understand?”

I looked at him, searching the hard, scarred lines of his face. He was an apex predator, a man who commanded an army of killers without batting an eye. Yet the look he gave me was completely devoid of deception.

Before I could answer, the lights in the penthouse flickered and died.

Total darkness plunged the suite into cold silence.

Adrian’s reaction was instantaneous. In a fraction of a second, he pulled me behind him, his gun drawn and leveled at the hallway.

“Matteo?” Adrian called out in a low whisper.

Silence. The emergency backup generators didn't kick on. The elevator chime didn't sound.

“Someone cut the master lines to the penthouse grid,” Adrian muttered, his voice cold as ice. “They bypassed the sub-levels.”

Suddenly, the reinforced glass window overlooking the terrace shattered inward with a deafening crash. Two figures dressed in tactical gear swung through the opening on rappel lines, their assault rifles raised.

Adrian shoved me behind the heavy kitchen island just as the darkness was illuminated by muzzle flashes. The roar of gunfire was deafening in the enclosed space.

Adrian fired three controlled shots from behind the island. One of the intruders dropped instantly to the floor with a heavy thud. The second moved behind a concrete pillar, returning fire, keeping Adrian pinned down.

Then, from the dark hallway behind us, a third shadow emerged.

I saw the glint of steel before I saw the face. It wasn't an outside assassin—it was Marco.

He looked unhinged, his hair disheveled, a bloody gash across his face from his time in the holding suite. He held a silenced Beretta aimed directly at Adrian’s exposed back.

“Adrian! Look out!” I screamed.

Without thinking, I grabbed a heavy crystal decanter from the island counter and hurled it with all my strength across the room.

The decanter struck Marco hard in the shoulder, shattering and spraying bourbon everywhere. His shot went wide, burying itself in the kitchen cabinets inches from my head.

Adrian spun with terrifying speed. Seeing Marco with the weapon, Adrian’s face transformed into an expression of pure, unadulterated fury. He didn't even use his gun; he closed the distance between them in two massive strides, grabbing Marco’s wrist and twisting it until the sickening crunch of breaking bone echoed through the penthouse.

Marco shrieked in agony as the gun clattered to the floor.

Adrian slammed his brother against the wall, his hand closing around Marco’s throat, lifting him several inches off the floor.

“Who unlocked your cell?” Adrian demanded, his voice trembling with deadly rage.

Marco choked, kicking his legs desperately, clawing at Adrian’s iron grip. “C-Carlo... Carlo’s here... he’s already inside the building...”

A gunshot cracked from the terrace.

The second intruder who had been pinned behind the pillar had leaned out to take aim at Adrian.

“Adrian!” I shouted, diving toward the floor.

Adrian reacted on pure instinct. He didn't drop Marco; he pulled Marco around like a human shield just as the assassin’s bullet tore through the air.

The round struck Marco directly in the center of his chest.

Marco gasped, a bright blossom of crimson erupting through his white shirt. His eyes rolled back into his head.

Adrian didn't hesitate. Raising his Sig Sauer over his dying brother’s shoulder, he put two clean rounds directly through the assassin’s forehead. The intruder collapsed backward onto the terrace, motionless.

The room fell into an eerie, ringing silence, broken only by Marco’s ragged, wet gasps.

Adrian lowered his brother gently to the floor, kneeling beside him. I scrambled over on my knees, my hands trembling as I pressed down on Marco’s chest, trying desperately to stem the catastrophic bleeding.

“Hold on, Marco! Adrian, call a medic!” I pleaded, the instinct to save a life overriding everything else.

Marco’s trembling, bloody fingers reached up, clutching the sleeve of Adrian’s shirt. Blood bubbled at the corners of his mouth.

“Adrian...” Marco wheezed, his voice fading rapidly into a whisper. “Carlo... Carlo set the ports on fire... he’s meeting Valenti at the docks... he traded you... for the city...”

Adrian stared down at his brother, his expression a mixture of profound grief and absolute stone. “Why did you do it, Marco? Why did you betray me?”

Marco’s gaze drifted toward the ceiling, his breathing shallow and rattling. “Because... I wanted to be... bigger than your shadow...”

With a final, trembling exhale, Marco’s head slumped to the side. His hand slipped from Adrian’s sleeve, hitting the hardwood floor with a dull thud.

Marco Moretti was dead.

I knelt there in the dark, my hands covered in the blood of the man who had grabbed my wrist only hours ago. My heart pounded like a trapped bird.

Adrian remained completely still for five long seconds. He gently closed his brother’s lifeless eyes.

Then he stood up.

He didn't shed a tear. He didn't scream. But when he looked down at me in the faint moonlight filtering through the shattered window, the warmth I had seen earlier had vanished, replaced by an inferno of pure, apocalyptic vengeance.

He reached down with his unbloodied hand and pulled me to my feet.

“It’s time to end this,” Adrian said, his voice flat, deadly, and terrifyingly calm. “Carlo dies tonight.”
