Chapter 6 - Blood on the Blueprint

The sixty-fourth floor of Montgomery Plaza smelled of polished mahogany, expensive espresso, and executive panic.
Every premier architectural firm in the tri-state area had sent their managing partners, dressed in charcoal Savile Row suits, clutching leather portfolio binders that cost more than a teacher’s monthly salary. When the elevator doors opened and I walked in—one arm immobilized in a surgical sling, dressed in an impeccably tailored ivory pantsuit that concealed my bandages—the whispering in the anteroom died instantly.
"Is that Claire Sterling?" one partner murmured behind his hand to an associate. "I heard she was hospitalized with fractured ribs."
"Her mother’s arraignment was on the front page of the *Chronicle* this morning," another whispered. "Her father’s firm filed emergency Chapter 11 two hours ago. What is she even doing here?"
I didn't blink. I walked past them toward the registration desk where Julian Montgomery stood talking to his chief structural engineer. Julian looked exhausted; dark circles bruised his handsome face, but when he saw me, his shoulders visibly loosened.
"Claire," he said, stepping forward with his hand outstretched before checking himself, remembering my injuries. "You shouldn't be walking. The doctors said you needed at least two weeks of bed rest."
"Blueprints don't draft themselves in bed, Julian," I said, handing my encrypted flash drive to the executive assistant behind the podium. "Is the board assembled?"
"They are," Julian said, lowering his voice as we moved toward the double doors of the boardroom. "Claire... my father is skeptical. My half-brother, Marcus, has spent the last forty-eight hours lobbying the independent directors to award the contract to Foster & Davis. Marcus is using your family’s scandal against you. He’s telling the board that the Sterling name is radioactive."
"The Sterling name belongs to my father’s dying shell company," I said, meeting Julian’s gaze with icy clarity. "My firm is registered as Aegis Design. Every line of calculation, every cantilevered joint in that presentation is mine. Let Marcus talk. He’s a hedge fund manager; he doesn't know the difference between tensile steel and drywall."
Julian smiled faintly, an expression of undeniable admiration flashing in his eyes. "Go get them, Claire."
The double doors opened. Inside, fifteen board members sat around a forty-foot walnut table. At the far end sat Arthur Montgomery, the legendary patriarch whose approval had launched empires and destroyed dynasties for half a century. To his right sat Marcus Sterling-Montgomery, Julian’s predatory half-brother, a smirk already curling his lips as I stepped into the room.
"Miss Sterling," Marcus spoke first, his voice dripping with condescending pity. "We are amazed you made it. Given the... domestic tragedy unfolding at the criminal courts today, the board was prepared to grant you a polite withdrawal without prejudice."
"I didn't come here for your pity, Marcus," I said, plugging the drive into the podium interface with my right hand. "I came to show you why your current tower design will collapse under high-altitude wind shear in eight years, and why only Aegis can fix it."

The projector flickered to life, bathing the boardroom in brilliant blue schematics. Marcus’s smirk vanished into absolute silence.
