Chapter 11 - The Architect's Countermove

The press room on the fiftieth floor of Montgomery Plaza was packed shoulder-to-shoulder with journalists, television cameras, and board directors when I walked through the side entrance at ten-fifty-five.

Marcus was already standing at the lectern, looking smug and triumphant. He had a microphone pinned to his tie and a polished speech prepared in his hand.

"...and while we all sympathize with Miss Sterling's traumatic family background," Marcus was saying to the eager reporters, "the Montgomery family cannot permit a multi-million-dollar civic project to be compromised by ethical doubts, elder manipulation, and potential evidence fabrication—"

"Then it's fortunate we don't have to rely on fabrications, Marcus," my voice rang out across the room, amplified by the podium microphone as Julian stepped aside to give me the floor.

Marcus choked on his words, his face flushing crimson as flashbulbs exploded across the gallery. "Miss Sterling! This is a closed board inquiry—"

"This is an open press conference on a public-private civic infrastructure project," Julian Montgomery announced, stepping to my side with a cold, aristocratic sneer aimed directly at his half-brother. "And as CEO of Montgomery Development, I yield the floor to our lead architect."

I stepped up to the secondary display podium. Behind me, the massive digital wall shifted from the Montgomery corporate logo to a split-screen interface.

"Ten hours ago," I spoke clearly into the bank of microphones, "an edited audio track was leaked to the press accusing me of assaulting Eleanor Sterling and bribing structural inspectors. Here is the uncompressed, raw audio file recorded from Sophia Sterling's brooch—recovered from the cloud server of Marcus Montgomery’s personal PR agency forty minutes ago under an emergency federal subpoena."

I tapped the screen.

The room filled with the crystal-clear audio of Eleanor’s venomous voice: *"Hold her down, Sophia! Take the ring off her fingers! If she won't sign the transfer papers, we’ll throw her over the banister and tell Vance she jumped!"* Followed immediately by the sound of glass shattering, my agonizing cry, and Sophia whispering: *"She’s bleeding everywhere, Mom, grab the diamond and let’s get out before Julian comes back!"*

The journalists gasped. The room erupted into frantic murmuring and rapid keyboard tapping.

"Furthermore," I continued without giving Marcus room to breathe, "we have traced the $250,000 payment for the doctored tape directly from Marcus Montgomery’s private offshore account to *The Manhattan Insider*’s holding firm. Detective Vance’s unit is currently downstairs with an arrest warrant for witness tampering, corporate extortion, and conspiracy to obstruct justice."

Marcus’s eyes bulged with terror. He turned toward the double doors, only to see two uniformed NYPD detectives standing beside Detective Vance, blocking the exit.

"Arthur Montgomery built this company on integrity," I said, looking Marcus dead in the eyes as the cameras caught every micro-expression of his total ruin. "You tried to build your coup on lies, blackmail, and my mother’s malice. You failed."

Arthur Montgomery, sitting in the front row of the board section, stood up slowly. He didn't even look at Marcus as he signaled the detectives with a single flick of his wrist.

"Take him out," the old man said coldly.

As the officers cuffed Marcus and led him past the flashing cameras, the room fell silent again, every lens turning toward me. I stood tall, unbowed, the platinum ring on my hand gleaming under the spotlight.

"Now," I said to the press corps, "are there any questions about the architecture?"
