Chapter 10 - The Poisoned Pen

Victory in Manhattan high society is never clean; it merely drives the rats deeper into the sewer to plot their next strike.

Three days after the eviction, my phone blew up at six in the morning with notifications. Nathan called before I could even clear my lock screen.

"Claire, don't look at Twitter," Nathan commanded, his voice tight with controlled fury. "Just open your laptop and log onto the secure firm server."

I sat up in bed, ignoring the dull ache in my healing shoulder, and booted up the monitor. The front page of *The Manhattan Insider*, a notorious digital gossip syndicate funded by shadowy private equity groups, carried a massive banner headline:

**BLOOD ON THE BLUEPRINT: HOW CLAIRE STERLING FRAMED HER MOTHER AND ROBBED HER FAMILY TO STEAL THE $400M MONTGOMERY TOWER CONTRACT.**

Below the headline was an edited, highly doctored audio recording from the night of the gala. In the altered clip, my voice sounded hysterical and aggressive, while Eleanor sounded like a terrified mother trying to reason with an out-of-control daughter before a scuffle broke out. Alongside the audio was a forged whistleblower statement claiming that I had paid off the forensic engineers who reviewed the Montgomery Spire blueprints.

Within two hours, the hashtag #CancelClaireSterling was trending number two nationwide.

Stock in the Montgomery Development Group dipped three percent at market open. By eight-thirty, my office phone was ringing non-stop with nervous inquiries from city zoning commissioners and sub-contractors.

"Who paid for this hit piece?" I asked Nathan, who had arrived at my private loft with a team of digital forensic analysts.

"The payment trail was bounced through three shell companies in the Cayman Islands," Nathan said, typing furiously on his tablet. "Marcus Sterling-Montgomery’s fingerprints are all over the banking routing numbers. But the audio file... the source recording didn't come from the ballroom cameras."

I frowned, replaying the audio in my mind. The acoustic resonance was close—too close. The microphone hadn't been in the ceiling; it had been pinned to someone’s clothing.

"Sophia," I said, the realization hitting me like ice water. "She was wearing that diamond lapel brooch Eleanor gave her for her birthday. It had an internal spy mic. Richard must have sold the raw file to Marcus for cash to pay his motel bills, and Marcus’s media team doctored the track."

"It gets worse," Nathan said, looking up from his screen. "Marcus just called an emergency meeting of the Montgomery Group ethics committee for eleven o’clock. He’s moving to suspend the Aegis contract pending an independent audit."

I stood up, walking over to the floor-to-ceiling mirror. I unclipped the silk sling, testing my left arm. The pain was sharp, but manageable. I slipped into a charcoal-grey power suit, pulling my hair back into an austere, razor-sharp ponytail.

"Call Julian," I commanded, adjusting the platinum ring on my finger. "Tell him not to cancel the ethics meeting. Tell him to invite the press corps."

"Claire," Nathan warned gently, "if this backfires, the city will blacklist you permanently."

"It won't backfire," I said, my reflection staring back at me with eyes forged in fire. "Marcus thinks he’s playing checkers with audio snippets. He forgets I’ve been archiving every single conversation in the Sterling household since the day Grandma died."
