Chapter 9 - THE HEARING

The hearing was packed.
Reporters.
Investors.
Family members.
Former employees.
And dozens of people connected to the Bennett foundation.
Grant entered wearing a tailored suit.
Vanessa sat beside him.
She looked smaller than I remembered.
My father sat alone behind them.
My mother refused to sit with either side.
When I entered, the room became silent.
The judge called the proceedings to order.
Grant's attorney stood.
"My client believes the inheritance was improperly transferred."
The attorney argued that I had manipulated evidence.
That I had influenced my biological father.
That the trust was based on decades-old documents.
Then came the final accusation.
"Ms. Bennett was adopted. Therefore, the original intent of the trust is questionable."
I stood.
"My adoption is not evidence of fraud."
The judge nodded.
Then Evelyn Cross stood.
"Your Honor, we have something to present."
She opened a sealed box.
Inside was an original document.
Handwritten.
Signed by Eleanor Cross.
Witnessed by three attorneys.
And recorded with the state thirty-one years ago.
The judge read it.
Then looked up.
"This document clearly identifies Lauren Bennett as the sole biological beneficiary."
Grant's face fell.
But Evelyn wasn't finished.
"We also have financial records proving that Mr. Grant Bennett attempted to transfer funds from the trust after learning of Ms. Bennett's existence."
The courtroom erupted.
Grant's attorney stood.
"Objection!"
The judge overruled.
Then the prosecutor presented the surveillance evidence.
The tracker.
The photographs.
The payments.
The forged DNA test.
The forged signature.
The private investigator.
The manipulated adoption records.
One by one.
Grant's entire plan collapsed.
Then came Vanessa.
The prosecutor played the recording from the dinner.
Vanessa's own voice filled the courtroom.
"You said Lauren had to disappear."
Vanessa began crying.
Grant turned toward her.
"You ruined everything."
She stared at him.
"No."
Her voice shook.
"You did."
For the first time, she looked at me.
"I'm sorry."
I didn't answer.
She continued crying.
"I thought you were taking everything from us."
I finally spoke.
"I didn't take anything."
She looked confused.
"I was never trying to take your life."
I paused.
"You were trying to take mine."
The judge sentenced Grant after the criminal proceedings concluded.
Vanessa received a separate sentence and financial penalties.
Richard Hale lost his license and faced criminal charges.
The Bennett foundation was dismantled.
My father was never charged because investigators determined he had concealed information but had not participated in the fraud.
Still, he lost something.
His family.
Not because I destroyed it.
Because he had spent decades choosing silence.
After the hearing, he approached me.
"I'm sorry."
I looked at him.
"I know."
"Can you ever forgive me?"
I thought about it.
"Maybe."
He nodded.
"That's more than I deserve."
"Yes."
He looked toward Maya and Lily.
"They're beautiful."
I smiled.
"They are."
"Do they know?"
"Everything they need to know."
He nodded.
Then he walked away.
I didn't chase him.
Some endings don't require reconciliation.
Sometimes peace means letting people live with the consequences of their choices.
Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded me.
One shouted:
"Lauren! Are you going to take over Bennett Holdings?"
I stopped.
I looked at Michael.
Then at Maya and Lily.
"No."
May you like
The reporters fell silent.
"I'm building something better."
