Chapter 4 - THE MAN THEY SAID WAS DEAD

Daniel Cross sat at our kitchen table until nearly three in the morning.
He didn't ask for coffee.
He didn't ask for water.
He simply stared at me.
Thirty-one years.
That's how long I had lived without knowing his face.
"You were told I was dead."
I nodded.
"I was."
He shook his head.
"No."
His voice was soft.
"I disappeared."
"Why?"
"Because your grandfather wanted me dead."
I stared at him.
"My grandfather?"
Daniel nodded.
"Your grandfather built the Bennett fortune through construction contracts, political connections, and financial manipulation."
Michael leaned forward.
"Can you prove that?"
Daniel placed a flash drive on the table.
"That's why I came."
I looked at it.
"What is it?"
"Everything."
He told us the story.
My biological mother, Eleanor, had discovered that the Bennett family foundation was being used to move illegal money through shell companies.
She was going to expose it.
Then she became pregnant with me.
Daniel wanted to take Eleanor and the baby somewhere safe.
Before they could leave, Eleanor disappeared.
Three weeks later, Daniel was attacked.
He survived.
Eleanor didn't.
But there was one thing the Bennett family didn't know.
Eleanor had already created a hidden trust.
A trust containing evidence.
And she named me as its beneficiary.
I stared at him.
"How much?"
Daniel shook his head.
"It isn't about money."
"What is it about?"
"Control."
He opened another file.
"The trust owns twenty-two percent of Bennett Holdings."
My mouth went dry.
Twenty-two percent.
That was more than enough to challenge Grant.
"Why didn't you contact me before?"
"Because the trust had a condition."
"What condition?"
"You had to reach thirty years old."
I stared at him.
"Why?"
"Your mother didn't trust anyone."
He smiled sadly.
"Especially the Bennett family."
Michael asked:
"So the trust became accessible last year?"
"Yes."
"Then why didn't Lauren receive it?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because someone intercepted the legal notice."
My stomach tightened.
"Who?"
Daniel didn't answer.
He didn't need to.
I knew.
Grant.
Vanessa.
Maybe my father.
Maybe all three.
Daniel continued.
"Your brother discovered the trust."
"Grant?"
"Yes."
"But if he isn't biologically related to me..."
"He doesn't need to be."
Daniel's voice hardened.
"Your grandfather left Grant as the preferred heir."
I understood.
Grant had spent years believing everything belonged to him.
The company.
The foundation.
The family.
Me.
And now there was a problem.
Me.
I asked:
"Why did Vanessa attack me?"
Daniel looked at me.
"Because she was trying to provoke you."
"Why?"
"To create a criminal complaint against you."
I frowned.
"Against me?"
"She wanted you to retaliate."
Michael's expression changed.
"She wanted Lauren arrested?"
Daniel nodded.
"Then she planned to use the incident to argue that you were unstable and unfit to control the trust."
I remembered Vanessa's expression.
Her confidence.
Her repeated attempts to make me lose my temper.
It had all been deliberate.
The slap wasn't an emotional outburst.
It was bait.
I stood.
"I want the truth."
Daniel looked at me.
"All of it."
He nodded.
Then he opened one final file.
There were photographs.
Grant meeting a lawyer.
Grant meeting a private investigator.
Grant meeting a man outside Maya's school.
I stared at the image.
"Who is that?"
Daniel answered:
"Someone Grant hired."
My hands curled into fists.
"They were watching my daughters."
"Yes."
"Why?"
Daniel looked at Michael.
Then at me.
"Because your daughters are legally connected to the trust."
I frowned.
"How?"
He showed me a document.
My adoption.
Then another.
Maya's adoption.
Lily's adoption.
My eyes widened.
"What?"
Daniel pointed to a clause.
"Your mother created a protected inheritance structure."
"Meaning?"
"If you died before the trust matured, your children would inherit."
I understood.
Grant didn't need to take the trust from me.
He could simply make sure I couldn't control it.
But there was another line.
I read it again.
In the event of suspicious death or incapacitation, control transfers to the next eligible beneficiary.
My children.
Maya.
Lily.
Michael whispered:
"So they were targeting the girls because—"
"Because whoever controls the children controls the trust."
The room went silent.
Then my phone rang.
It was the police.
The officer who had responded to the barbecue.
She said:
"Mrs. Bennett, we've reviewed the security footage from your parents' property."
"Okay."
"There is something you need to see."
"What?"
"A man entered the property before the party."
My heart stopped.
"Who?"
The officer paused.
"He was carrying a small device."
"What device?"
"A tracking beacon."
I looked at Michael.
May you like
The officer continued.
"We found it attached beneath your daughter's backpack."
