Chapter 7 - THE CONFESSION

Richard Hale confessed within forty-eight hours.

He admitted forging the amendment removing me from the trust.

He admitted altering adoption documents.

He admitted working with Grant.

But there was something he refused to explain.

Why?

The answer came from an old audio recording.

Richard had secretly recorded my grandfather decades earlier.

The recording had survived because Richard had feared his client.

My grandfather's voice was unmistakable.

"The girl must never know who her father is."

Then Richard asked:

"What about Grant?"

My grandfather answered:

"Grant is useful."

I closed my eyes.

Useful.

That was all Grant had ever been.

Not the heir.

Not the golden child.

A weapon.

My grandfather had adopted him because Grant's biological mother was connected to another wealthy family.

The Bennett fortune had been built through alliances.

Grant was part of the plan.

But I was the danger.

Because Eleanor had left evidence.

And because I was her daughter.

The recording continued.

My grandfather said:

"If Lauren ever discovers the trust, she will destroy everything."

Richard asked:

"Then why not eliminate her?"

My grandfather answered:

"Because she is family."

There was a long silence.

Then:

"Family is easier to control than an enemy."

I stopped the recording.

I couldn't listen anymore.

My entire childhood suddenly looked different.

The missing birthdays.

The favoritism.

The isolation.

The constant suggestion that I was somehow less important.

It had been deliberate.

Not all of it.

But enough.

Michael sat beside me.

"You don't have to forgive them."

"I know."

"You don't have to fix your family."

"I know."

"You only have to protect yours."

I looked at him.

He took my hand.

"I already did."

That night, Maya came into our bedroom.

"Mom?"

I sat up.

"What is it?"

She climbed onto the bed.

"Are we still a family?"

I hugged her.

"Always."

"Even if people say we're not?"

"Especially then."

She rested her head against me.

Then Lily appeared at the doorway.

"Can I come too?"

I laughed through tears.

"Of course."

Both girls climbed into the bed.

For the first time in days, I slept.

The next morning, we received another surprise.

The state had reopened my adoption case.

The court recognized Daniel as my biological father.

The trust was frozen pending investigation.

And Grant and Vanessa were formally charged with multiple offenses related to fraud, harassment, surveillance, and conspiracy.

But the biggest shock came from my mother.

She called me.

"Lauren."

Her voice trembled.

"Yes?"

"I want to tell you the truth."

I almost said no.

But something stopped me.

"Okay."

She cried.

"I knew."

My chest tightened.

"You knew what?"

"About Eleanor."

I closed my eyes.

"How long?"

"Since before we adopted you."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Your father begged me."

"That isn't enough."

"I was afraid."

"Of what?"

She whispered:

"Of losing Grant."

I felt numb.

"Why?"

"Because Grant knew the truth."

I frowned.

"He knew?"

"He discovered it when he was sixteen."

My heart sank.

"Then why did he hate me?"

My mother cried harder.

"Because he believed you were the reason he would never inherit everything."

I understood.

But then she said something I didn't expect.

"Lauren, there's one more thing."

"What?"

"Your grandfather didn't create the trust."

I froze.

"Who did?"

"Eleanor."

"What?"

"She created it before you were born."

My mother whispered:

"And she didn't leave you just money."

"What did she leave?"

"A company."

I stared at the wall.

"What company?"

My mother answered:

"Cross Atlantic Holdings."

I knew that name.

Everyone did.

It was a private investment company worth billions.

I laughed.

"No."

My mother whispered:

"Yes."

I sat there in silence.

The woman I had been told was dead.

The mother I had never known.

Had apparently built an empire.

May you like

And somehow—

She had left it to me.
