Chapter 2 - THE FILE HE THOUGHT WAS DESTROYED

We left the mansion under a wall of camera flashes.

Someone had alerted the press.

Within minutes, photographs of me leaving my husband's mansion while eight months pregnant were spreading across social media.

But I didn't know the biggest story had not even begun.

My father's private vehicle took us to his downtown penthouse.

A doctor was already waiting.

After examining me, she reassured us that the baby appeared stable.

I finally allowed myself to breathe.

My father sat beside the bed.

"I'm sorry," he whispered.

I looked at him.

"You didn't know."

"I should have."

"You respected my decision to build my own life."

He looked down.

"I didn't know he would become this."

Neither did I.

Or perhaps I had known.

Just not soon enough.

Later that night, my attorney, Daniel Reeves, entered carrying a black case.

"We found something."

He placed a laptop on the table.

"The original Blackwood acquisition proposal."

Ethan had once told me he married me because he loved my simplicity.

The document told a different story.

Daniel opened it.

There was Ethan's signature.

And underneath it:

Target: Ava Hale.

I stared at the screen.

My father remained silent.

Daniel continued.

"Three years ago, Ethan's company was facing a liquidity crisis. Your father had refused to invest."

"So Ethan researched me."

"Yes."

My stomach tightened.

"He knew who I was?"

"Not everything. But enough."

Daniel opened another document.

It contained photographs of me taken before my marriage.

My workplace.

My apartment.

My daily schedule.

My friends.

My father's company.

Everything.

"He investigated you for six months."

My hands went cold.

"Why?"

Daniel looked at my father.

"Because Ethan believed marrying Richard Hale's daughter would give him access to Hale Global."

I whispered:

"So he never loved me."

My father reached for my hand.

"No."

Daniel shook his head.

"There is more."

He opened a second file.

It contained emails between Ethan and Vivian.

One sentence made my heart stop.

Once she gives birth, we isolate her psychologically, establish incompetence, and petition for custody.

I closed my eyes.

My unborn son moved beneath my ribs.

I whispered:

"You wanted my baby."

Vivian's voice suddenly came through the laptop speakers.

The recording had been made months earlier.

"Ethan, don't underestimate her. She's emotional. After childbirth, she'll be even easier to control."

Then Ethan's voice.

"How long before we can access the trust?"

Vivian laughed.

"Once the child is born, the trust administrator will have to review the beneficiary structure."

I opened my eyes.

"My trust?"

Daniel nodded.

"They knew about it."

My father looked furious.

But Daniel wasn't finished.

"There was one more person involved."

A name appeared on the screen.

Dr. Martin Cole.

The private psychiatrist who had signed the medical reports claiming I was unstable.

I recognized him.

"He examined me once."

Daniel shook his head.

"He never did."

"What?"

"The medical reports were fabricated."

My father stood.

"Where is this doctor?"

Daniel smiled.

"That's the interesting part."

He clicked another file.

Dr. Cole had disappeared six days ago.

But before disappearing, he had sent a package.

To my father.

Inside was a USB drive.

Daniel plugged it in.

A video appeared.

Dr. Cole sat in a dim room.

He looked terrified.

"If you're watching this, I failed to protect someone."

He looked directly into the camera.

"Mrs. Hale was never mentally unstable."

I covered my mouth.

"Her husband paid me to create the reports."

The video continued.

"But I discovered something afterward."

He leaned closer.

"The reports weren't the real plan."

My father stared at the screen.

"What plan?"

Dr. Cole swallowed.

"Her husband planned to declare her mentally incompetent after delivery."

My heart raced.

"Then he intended to have her transferred to a private facility."

Daniel paused the recording.

"That's not all."

He opened another document.

A transfer agreement.

A private psychiatric facility.

My name.

My signature.

Except I had never signed it.

I stared at the forged document.

Then I noticed something.

A witness signature.

My blood ran cold.

"That's Vivian's."

Daniel nodded.

"Exactly."

My father leaned back.

"Then we have fraud, conspiracy, coercion, forged medical records, and attempted custodial interference."

I looked at him.

"What happens now?"

He answered:

"Now we stop reacting."

He closed the laptop.

"Now we make them react."

The next morning, Ethan woke up to the biggest financial disaster of his life.

Three banks froze his credit.

Two major partners terminated contracts.

His company stock plunged.

And at 9:03 a.m., the board received an emergency notice.

Richard Hale had requested a special meeting.

Ethan called me seventeen times.

I answered the eighteenth.

"What do you want?"

His voice was shaking.

"Please."

That word was almost unfamiliar.

"Please don't destroy my company."

I looked down at my belly.

"You destroyed something first."

"What?"

"My trust."

Silence.

Then he whispered:

"I love you."

I closed my eyes.

"No, Ethan."

I hung up.

And somewhere across the city, my husband finally understood that money couldn't buy back what he had broken.

But the next twist was waiting.

Because when Daniel reviewed the financial records, he discovered that Ethan's company wasn't merely in debt.

Someone had been secretly transferring millions out of it.

And the destination account belonged to...

Vivian Blackwood.
