Chapter 1 - THE MAN WHO WALKED THROUGH THE DOOR

The front door opened.

For three seconds, nobody moved.

Ethan's hand was still raised.

I was on the marble floor, one arm wrapped around my eight-month pregnant belly, the other trembling beneath me.

Then my father's voice filled the foyer.

"Take your hand away from my daughter."

Ethan slowly turned.

The color disappeared from his face.

Vivian's wineglass slipped from her fingers and shattered against the marble.

My father stood beneath the doorway in a black overcoat, his silver hair perfectly combed, his expression terrifyingly calm.

Richard Hale.

CEO of Hale Global.

The man whose photograph appeared on the covers of business magazines beside words like billionaire, strategist, and industrial powerhouse.

But Ethan didn't know him as my father.

He knew him as the mysterious investor who had recently acquired a significant portion of the debt attached to Blackwood Holdings.

And suddenly, Ethan understood why my father was standing inside his house.

"Dad," I whispered.

His eyes immediately softened when he looked at me.

Then they moved to my swollen stomach.

Then to my face.

And finally back to Ethan.

"You have thirty seconds," he said quietly. "Explain why my pregnant daughter is bleeding."

Ethan swallowed.

"Mr. Hale, this isn't what it looks like."

My father didn't blink.

"Then what does it look like?"

Vivian stepped forward.

"Richard, surely there's been a misunderstanding."

My father turned toward her.

"I didn't come here to speak with you."

Her face tightened.

He looked back at Ethan.

"You have twenty seconds."

Ethan straightened his shirt.

"I'm her husband."

"No," my father said.

The word echoed through the foyer.

"You're the man who married my daughter under a false understanding of who she was."

Ethan froze.

Vivian stared at me.

"You knew?" she whispered.

I slowly pushed myself upright.

My father immediately moved toward me, but I shook my head.

"I can stand."

He stopped.

That was the difference between my father and Ethan.

My father never needed to control me to prove he loved me.

He simply stood beside me.

Ethan stared at me.

"You're Richard Hale's daughter?"

I looked him directly in the eyes.

"My name isn't Ava Miller."

His jaw tightened.

"My name is Ava Hale."

Silence.

Vivian took one step backward.

"No..."

I nodded.

"Yes."

Ethan's face changed.

For two years, he had believed he married a powerless woman.

He had mocked my secondhand clothes.

He had questioned every dollar I spent.

He had told his friends that I was lucky to have him.

He had never understood why I never complained.

Because I had been watching.

Recording.

Waiting.

And now the waiting was over.

My father's attorney stepped forward and placed a thick folder on the table.

"Mr. Blackwood," he said, "you and your mother are hereby notified that all proceedings concerning Mrs. Blackwood's safety, marital assets, and unborn child will be handled through our office."

Ethan laughed nervously.

"You can't just walk into my house and threaten me."

My father looked around.

"This house?"

He smiled faintly.

"Interesting choice of words."

Ethan frowned.

"What?"

My father's attorney opened the folder.

"The mortgage on this property was purchased by Hale Capital six months ago."

Ethan's smile disappeared.

"That's impossible."

"It isn't."

The attorney placed another document on the table.

"And the controlling debt position of Blackwood Holdings was transferred to Hale Global three weeks ago."

Vivian's face went white.

I watched Ethan realize something.

His empire wasn't collapsing tonight.

It had already collapsed.

He just hadn't received the notification yet.

My father looked at me.

"Do you want to leave?"

I placed my hand over my belly.

"Yes."

Ethan stepped forward.

"You can't take my wife."

My father's security officers moved between us.

My father answered calmly.

"Your wife is an adult. She decides where she goes."

I looked at Ethan.

"No."

His expression hardened.

I continued.

"I am not your wife anymore in everything that matters."

He stared at me.

"You can't do this."

I reached up and removed my wedding ring.

I placed it on the marble table.

"I already did."

Then my father noticed something on the floor.

A small red light.

The hidden camera.

He looked at me.

I nodded.

"It's been recording for three weeks."

My father's attorney smiled.

"And transmitting."

Ethan's face collapsed.

Every threat.

Every insult.

Every admission.

Every conversation with Vivian.

All of it existed.

But I wasn't finished.

As I walked toward the door, my phone vibrated.

One message.

From my attorney.

WE FOUND THE ORIGINAL FILE.

I stopped.

"What original file?"

He looked at me seriously.

"The one proving your husband didn't marry you for love."

I turned around.

"Then let's hear it."

May you like

And for the first time that night...

Ethan looked afraid.
