665 THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 9 / 10

Chapter 9 - THE LAST SECRET

Two weeks passed.

The company stabilized.

The mansion became quiet.

I moved my bedroom to the east wing.

For the first time, I slept without hearing anyone else's footsteps outside my door.

Then Evelyn came to see me.

She wasn't wearing designer clothes.

She looked different.

Smaller.

Human.

“I want to apologize.”

I listened.

“I was a terrible mother.”

“Yes.”

She swallowed.

“I let fear control me.”

“Yes.”

“I should have protected you.”

“Yes.”

She nodded.

“I know.”

She handed me a box.

Inside was a necklace.

My mother's necklace.

“I bought it the day you were born.”

I touched it.

“Why didn't you give it to me?”

“Because your father told me to wait until you were safe.”

I looked at her.

“Am I safe now?”

Evelyn smiled sadly.

“Yes.”

She stood.

“I'll testify against Arthur.”

“You'll go to prison.”

“I know.”

“Why?”

“Because for once, I'm choosing you over myself.”

She left.

I cried after she was gone.

Not because I forgave her.

Not yet.

But because I finally understood that some people could be both victims and villains.

That afternoon, Daniel called.

“We found the lawyer.”

“Where?”

“Airport.”

“What happened?”

“He tried to leave the country.”

“Did he have the photograph?”

“Yes.”

My heart raced.

“Where is he now?”

“Police custody.”

I rushed to the station.

The photograph was on the table.

I turned it over.

There was writing on the back.

My father's handwriting.

The person who ordered this wasn't Arthur.

I stared.

Then read the next line.

It was Richard.

But Richard had already been arrested.

Why would my father write that?

Daniel looked confused.

“Maybe Richard was acting alone.”

“No.”

I looked closer.

There was another sentence.

Richard was protecting someone.

I froze.

“Who?”

We examined the handwriting.

There was a final word.

ELENA.

I couldn't breathe.

My father had been protecting me.

Not from Arthur.

Not from my grandfather.

From someone else.

Thomas suddenly entered.

“We found a second recording.”

“Where?”

“In the courthouse evidence.”

He handed me headphones.

I pressed play.

My father's voice came through.

“If Elena is ever in danger, there is one person she must never trust.”

I waited.

Then he said the name.

“Evelyn.”

I stared.

The recording continued.

“She loves Elena.”

“But she will choose power if forced.”

My heart broke.

The entire story changed again.

Evelyn had been telling the truth.

And yet my father had never trusted her completely.

Why?

The answer came in the next sentence.

“Because Evelyn is not the person she claims to be.”

I looked at Daniel.

“What does that mean?”

The recording ended.

Then another voice appeared.

A man's voice.

My grandfather.

He said:

“Elena isn't Evelyn's only child.”

I froze.

“What?”

Daniel stared at me.

My grandfather continued.

“There was another baby.”

A boy.

My half-brother.

Taken from the family twenty-eight years ago.

And the person who raised him was…

Arthur Harrison.

I couldn't speak.

Thomas looked at the records.

“There may be another heir.”

My grandfather's final words echoed through the speakers.

“If you ever find him, tell him the truth.”

Then the recording ended.

I looked at Daniel.

“Find him.”

Three days later, we had a name.

Nathan Cole.

A quiet architect living in Oregon.

Age twenty-eight.

No criminal record.

No connection to Harrison Holdings.

But his DNA matched Evelyn's.

May you like

He was my brother.

And he had no idea who he really was.
