665 THE HOUSE WAS NEVER HIS / Chapter 7 / 10

Chapter 7 - THE ROOM BENEATH THE HOUSE

We found the entrance behind the wine cellar.

A section of stone moved when Caleb pressed his hand against it.

A staircase appeared.

I descended first.

The room beneath the house was enormous.

It looked like a private archive.

Boxes filled the walls.

Photographs.

Contracts.

Bank records.

Letters.

Every secret the family had buried for decades was there.

And in the center sat a safe.

Daniel opened it.

Inside was the original trust agreement.

But there was something else.

A photograph.

My grandfather.

My father.

Evelyn.

Arthur.

And a fifth person.

I recognized him immediately.

Richard Vale.

My grandfather's attorney.

The same man who had told me he was protecting me.

I stared at the photograph.

“He lied.”

Daniel nodded.

Thomas opened another file.

Inside were payment records to Richard.

Millions.

For decades.

I felt sick.

“He wasn't my grandfather's lawyer.”

Daniel looked at the documents.

“He was everyone's lawyer.”

A voice came from behind us.

“That isn't entirely true.”

We turned.

Richard Vale stood at the bottom of the stairs.

He was holding a cane.

Thomas reached for his weapon.

Richard raised his hand.

“I came to finish what I started.”

I stared at him.

“You knew.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my father was going to die.”

“Yes.”

“You knew my grandfather planned everything.”

“Yes.”

“You knew Evelyn was my mother.”

“Yes.”

“And you helped them?”

Richard's face collapsed.

“I helped myself.”

He admitted everything.

He had forged documents.

Created shell companies.

Moved money.

Manipulated the trust.

And when my father discovered the truth, Richard had helped Arthur silence him.

But there was one thing he hadn't expected.

My grandfather had secretly recorded him.

The final recording was on a small tape.

Richard's confession.

Everything.

Names.

Dates.

Payments.

Orders.

Including the murder of my father.

The room fell silent.

Thomas looked at Richard.

“You're under arrest.”

Richard didn't resist.

But before he was taken away, he turned to me.

“You think this is over?”

I stared.

“What do you mean?”

“Arthur has the second half.”

“Of what?”

“The trust.”

My heart dropped.

Richard smiled sadly.

“The trust was divided into two originals.”

“Where is the second?”

He looked at Caleb.

“Your husband knows.”

I turned.

Caleb looked horrified.

“What?”

Richard said:

“Your father gave it to you.”

Caleb shook his head.

“I never had it.”

“You did.”

“When?”

“The day you married Elena.”

I remembered.

At our rehearsal dinner, Arthur had given Caleb a small box.

Caleb had said it was a family tradition.

He had kept it in his office.

We searched the office.

Inside a drawer was the box.

Caleb opened it.

Inside was a second trust document.

And a letter.

He read it silently.

Then handed it to me.

I read:

Caleb,

If you are reading this, then the marriage happened.

You were never supposed to love her.

You were supposed to take everything.

But if you have fallen in love with Elena, destroy this letter and finish what I started.

If you betray me, I will destroy her.

I looked at Caleb.

He was crying.

“He threatened you,” I whispered.

“Yes.”

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because I thought I could protect you.”

“You almost destroyed me.”

“I know.”

I held the two trust documents together.

The signatures matched.

The entire trust was finally complete.

And it gave me something Arthur never expected.

Absolute control.

But before I could celebrate, Thomas received a call.

His expression changed.

“What?”

He listened.

Then looked at me.

“Arthur is at the courthouse.”

“Why?”

“He's filed a claim against you.”

“For what?”

Thomas hesitated.

“Fraud.”

I almost laughed.

“What fraud?”

Thomas looked at the documents in my hands.

“He claims you stole the company.”

I smiled.

“Then let him prove it.”

Because for the first time, I wasn't afraid.

I had the documents.

I had the recordings.

I had the ledgers.

And I had the truth.

Arthur had finally made one mistake.

May you like

He had taken me to court.

And he had no idea I was ready.
