Chapter 8 - UNRAVELING THE TRUST

By Thursday morning, the story was leading every major national network. News vans were parked three deep along the perimeter of the county courthouse. But while the justice system was closing its jaws around Sterling and my stepmother, another battle was brewing over Grandfather’s land.

"We have a problem," Julian said, entering my temporary apartment with three thick binders.

I looked up from my laptop, where I had been reviewing landscape restoration blueprints for the forest acreage. "What kind of problem?"

"Grandfather’s trust was created forty years ago," Julian explained, setting the binders on the table. "While the land itself is completely protected from outside sale, there was a secondary clause regarding the mineral and water rights attached to the western parcel. Red Oak Holdings didn't just want to build condominiums, Meredith. They conducted covert geological surveys two years ago."

Naomi brought over a pot of fresh coffee. "What did they find?"

"Lithium," Julian said simply. "A massive, untapped deposit of high-grade lithium right beneath the riverbed. That land isn't worth eight million dollars. It’s worth over four hundred million."

The room fell dead silent.

"Cassidy and Lydia were playing for pennies," I realized aloud. "Sterling offered them a few million dollars, knowing he was sitting on a fortune that could power half the tech corridor on the East Coast."

"And here is the twist," Julian said, turning to a yellowed page inside the oldest binder. "Under Grandfather’s original charter, if any beneficiary attempts to alienate, destroy, or criminally conspire to seize control of the trust property, their entire lineage is permanently disinherited. That means Cassidy and Lydia are legally stripped of every dime, forever."

"And me?" I asked quietly.

"You become the sole, irrevocable trustee with absolute power of disposition," Julian replied. "You can preserve the entire forest, establish a non-profit environmental sanctuary, or license the clean extraction rights under state oversight. The choice is completely yours."

A knock sounded at the door. Naomi checked the security peephole before pulling it open. Standing in the hallway was Detective Reyes, holding an evidence bag containing a familiar, rhinestone-encrusted designer purse.

"Cassidy's property from the night of the attack," Reyes said, stepping inside. "The crime lab just finished extracting the cloud backups from her secondary phone. Meredith... there’s something you need to hear."
