Chapter 18 - SMOKE AND MIRRORS

The motorized shades whirred downward, plunging the boardroom into darkness. A blinding beam of light hit the polished projection screen behind Victoria’s head.

The first slide was not a balance sheet. It was a high-resolution forensic photograph of the delivery receipt recovered from Lydia’s vanity, juxtaposed with the certified signature card of Victoria’s Swiss private banking account.

A collective murmur rippled down the table.

"For fifteen years," I began, my voice ringing clear and steady in the quiet room, "the board has operated under the fiction that Red Oak Holdings was an aggressive external equity firm trying to force a hostile takeover of our timber reserves. But Red Oak was never an outsider."

Naomi advanced the slide. A detailed financial flow chart appeared, tracing fifty-two separate wire transfers from Victoria’s Geneva holdings into the corporate accounts of Richard Sterling, and subsequently into shell companies that bought up Vance commercial debt at distressed prices.

"Aunt Victoria didn't just invest in Red Oak," I said, turning to face the assembled board members. "She created it. She intentionally choked our father's timber operations by blocking equipment financing, engineered the foreclosure threats against our ancestral home, and when my father refused to yield, she instructed Richard Sterling to substitute his heart medication with synthetic digitalis."

Judge Miller dropped his pen. His face had gone pale as chalk. "Victoria... is this true?"

"This is slanderous theater!" Victoria hissed, rising to her feet, her knuckles white against the mahogany surface. "Manufactured documents fabricated by a disgruntled niece and an ambitious young attorney! These offshore accounts have no legal connection to me! Anyone can forge a signature on a Swiss facsimile!"

"We didn't rely on facsimiles, Mrs. Holloway," Julian said calmly, opening his leather briefcase and extracting a heavy digital recorder. "Detective Reyes arrested Richard Sterling's personal accountant at Kennedy Airport at four o'clock this morning. He was attempting to board a flight to Zurich with four encrypted hard drives."

Julian hit the play button.

The room filled with the unmistakable, raspy voice of Richard Sterling, recorded during his FBI proffer session only hours prior:

*“Victoria told me that Lydia was getting too unpredictable. She said if Lydia botched the gala confrontation, I was to trigger the default clauses on the river property immediately. She specifically ordered the chemical compound for the cocktail. She said, 'Meredith must not survive that evening with her reputation or her physical capacity intact. The Vance name must belong to me alone.'”*

The silence in the room was suffocating.

Victoria’s attorneys leaned in, urgently whispering into her ear, but she shoved their hands away. The veneer of polished matriarch had completely evaporated, revealing the snarling, cornered beast within.

"You ungrateful little wretch," Victoria spat, her voice trembling with decades of unmasked fury. "I built this family! Your father was a spineless academic who would have given these sixty acres away to the state for nothing! I gave this family power! I gave it wealth!"

"You gave us murder, treason, and a sister locked behind iron bars," I said, stepping even closer. "And under Section Twelve of the Vance Charter, your shares are hereby officially declared forfeit for treason against the trust."
