Chapter 21 - THE CRACKING DYNASTY

With Victoria in maximum-security remand and Lydia transferred to a state psychiatric medical facility, the remaining structure of Red Oak Holdings crumbled with astonishing speed.
Over the next three weeks, federal authorities seized over eighty million dollars in illicit offshore assets. Julian worked sixteen hours a day alongside the Attorney General’s special task force, systematically uncoupling the Vance family trust from the web of debt Victoria had spun around it.
One evening, as rain pattered against the library windows of the river house, Julian spread a thick sheaf of parchment across my father’s desk.
"Every creditor claim has been dismissed with prejudice," Julian said, his eyes bright with victory. "The state court has issued the final decree of distribution. The river acreage, the timberline, the historic homestead—they are entirely yours, free and clear of all liens."
Naomi entered carrying a tray with three glasses of sparkling cider. "And the state conservation trust officially ratified the boundary markers this afternoon. The entire sixty-acre parcel is now formally dedicated as the *Arthur Vance Memorial Wildlife Sanctuary.* No developer will ever touch a stone."
I picked up my glass and looked around the room. For the first time since my father's passing, the heavy, suffocating shadow that had hung over these walls felt completely lifted. The grandfather clock in the hall ticked with a steady, peaceful cadence.
I looked into the small oval mirror hanging beside the bookcase. The scar on my cheek was still there—pale, sharp, and permanent. But it no longer felt like a brand of victimization. It was a badge of survival, a reminder of the price paid for truth.
"To Dad," I toasted quietly, raising my glass.
"To Dad," Julian and Naomi echoed, clinking their glasses against mine.
The nightmare, it seemed, had finally run its course. Justice had been meted out with absolute precision. We had saved our father's land, unmasked the monsters, and survived the fire.

Or so we believed.
