Chapter 7 - The Reckoning in Court

The courtroom of Judge Evelyn Vance (no relation to Marcus, though they shared the same ironclad reputation) was packed to capacity two weeks later.

Flashbulbs popped outside the courthouse as media outlets picked up the story: “Chicago Real Estate Heir and Prominent Family Under Federal Investigation Following Thanksgiving Day Assault Scandal and High-Society Divorce Filing.”

Inside, the atmosphere was electric.

Frank Peterson sat at the defense table looking ten years older, his tailored suit hanging loosely on his frame. Beside him sat Carol, tight-faced and trembling with suppressed rage. Mark sat a few seats down, his eyes fixed firmly on the polished mahogany table, unable to look up.

At the plaintiff’s table, I sat beside Marcus and Zoe. I wore a sharp navy blue dress, my posture immaculate, my expression completely serene.

“All rise for the Honorable Judge Vance,” the bailiff announced.

Judge Vance entered, her sharp eyes scanning the courtroom before she sat down. “Please be seated. We are here today for an emergency custody hearing, property injunction review, and preliminary motions in the matter of Peterson v. Peterson.”

She adjusted her glasses and looked directly at Mark’s defense attorney, a high-priced corporate lawyer who was sweating profusely under his collar.

“Counsel,” Judge Vance began, her voice cutting through the silence like a scalpel. “I have reviewed the emergency filings, the police report from Thanksgiving night, the medical documentation of the minor child’s physical assault, and the forensic banking audit provided by the state prosecutor’s office.”

She paused, letting the heavy silence settle over the room.

“In my thirty years on the bench, I have rarely seen a more egregious display of family collusion, systemic intimidation, and gross disregard for the safety and welfare of a minor child.”

Frank flinched visibly. Carol opened her mouth to protest, but her lawyer quickly put a hand on her arm to shut her down.

“Furthermore,” Judge Vance continued, “the court has received a joint stipulation signed by both parties regarding asset division and sole legal and physical custody.”

All heads turned toward Mark.

Mark slowly raised his head, his face pale and hollowed out by weeks of sleepless nights. He looked across the aisle at me. His eyes were glassy, filled with a desperate, pleading regret.

He knew what he had signed.

“Mr. Peterson,” Judge Vance said, addressing Mark directly. “You have agreed to grant sole legal and physical custody of your daughter, Lily Peterson, to her mother, Chloe Peterson, with supervised visitation only upon psychiatric evaluation and approval by the court-appointed child psychologist.”

Mark’s voice cracked as he whispered into the microphone, “Yes, Your Honor.”

“You have also agreed to relinquish all claims to the marital residence, transfer all shared accounts to the plaintiff to satisfy pending legal restitution and financial audit liabilities, and consent to a permanent restraining order protecting Chloe and Lily Peterson from Megan and Carol Peterson.”

“Yes, Your Honor,” Mark repeated, a tear finally escaping his eye and rolling down his cheek.

Judge Vance struck her gavel once. The sharp crack echoed through the courtroom like a final gunshot.

“Orders are entered as stated. This court is adjourned.”
