Chapter 4 - The Boardroom Coup

Monday morning at Peterson & Associates Real Estate Development was usually a temple of calm corporate efficiency. Today, however, the executive floor felt like a war zone.

Frank Peterson sat behind his massive mahogany desk on the 40th floor, his face dark as a thundercloud. Across from him sat Mark, looking disheveled and frantic.

“What do you mean, they froze our operating accounts?” Mark demanded, slamming his hand on the desk.

“I mean exactly what I said, you idiot!” Frank roared, slamming a printed bank statement down. “Marcus Vance didn’t just file a custody suit for Chloe. He slapped a massive emergency injunction on our commercial escrow accounts tied to the Lakeshore development project, claiming co-mingled marital assets and potential dissipation of funds by the firm!”

Frank stood up, his face purple with rage. “Do you have any idea how many millions of dollars are sitting in those accounts? If the investors catch wind of a fraud and asset-freezing investigation, our entire portfolio collapses before the end of the week!”

Mark felt the room tilt. “But... how can Chloe do that? She doesn’t know anything about the firm’s finances!”

“No, but her lawyer does!” Frank barked. “And Zoe Sterling—your wife’s best friend—is the chief financial officer of Apex Venture Capital, one of our primary silent backers! Do you know what Zoe did this morning at 8:00 AM? She pulled their entire twenty-million-dollar credit line from our portfolio!”

Mark stared at his father in absolute horror. Twenty million dollars. Gone in a single phone call.

“Call her,” Frank ordered, pointing a trembling finger at Mark. “Call your wife right now. Grovel, beg, do whatever it takes. Get her to call off her pit bull of a lawyer and her rich friends. If you don't fix this by noon, I am stripping you of your partnership and cutting you out of the trust fund entirely.”

Before Mark could pull out his phone, the heavy oak doors of Frank’s office swung wide open.

Standing in the doorway wasn’t an assistant.

It was Chloe.

She wore a charcoal-gray tailored pantsuit, her hair pulled back in a sleek, elegant knot. She didn’t look like the scholarship girl from Ohio who used to nervously smile at their family dinners. She looked like a woman holding a executioner’s axe.

Behind her stood Marcus Vance, holding a polished leather briefcase, and two corporate auditors from the state banking commission.

Frank’s jaw dropped. “You... how did you get up here? Security!”

“Security is currently downstairs answering questions from the state banking inspectors about unauthorized transfers between personal trust accounts and corporate escrow funds,” Marcus said smoothly, walking into the room like he owned the building.

Chloe didn’t even look at Frank. Her cold, piercing gaze locked entirely onto her husband.

Mark stood up slowly, his voice trembling. “Chloe... honey... let’s talk. Please. This is getting out of hand.”

Chloe stopped two feet away from him. She didn’t raise her voice. She didn’t yell. She spoke with a quiet, devastating calm that chilled Mark to his core.

“Don’t call me honey, Mark,” Chloe said softly. “And save your breath. You had your chance to talk on Thursday night, when your sister assaulted our daughter. You chose your family’s comfort over your own child.”

She opened a folder she was holding and tossed a single piece of paper onto the desk in front of Frank.

“What is this?” Frank snarled, glancing down.

“That,” Chloe said, “is a forensic audit report proving that over the last three years, Frank Peterson systematically funneled nearly two million dollars from residential escrow deposits into personal offshore accounts to fund Megan’s lifestyle and cover your bad gambling debts.”

Frank’s face went chalk white. He grabbed the edge of the desk so hard his knuckles turned white. “That’s... that’s a lie! Fabrication!”

“Is it?” Marcus smiled, opening his briefcase. “Because the federal prosecutor’s office seems to think it’s compelling enough to warrant an immediate warrant. And since Chloe is your son’s legal spouse, she holds full signatory rights to review and subpoena every single marital asset you two tried to hide behind corporate walls.”

Chloe turned back to Mark, her eyes burning with icy fire.

“You wanted peace, Mark?” she whispered. “Welcome to the storm.”
