Chapter 1 - The Reinforcements Arrive

The November wind sweeping off Lake Michigan felt like a wall of ice. Sitting on the cold stone stoop of the Peterson brownstone, I held Lily tightly against my chest, wrapping my cardigan around her small shoulders. My house slippers offered zero protection against the frozen concrete, but the physical cold was nothing compared to the numbness spreading through my chest.

Seven years. Seven years of biting my tongue at Christmas dinners, of nodding politely when Carol criticized my career, of letting Mark handle—or rather, ignore—his family’s casual cruelty because I thought we were a team.

Not anymore.

Fifteen minutes on the dot, the dual headlights of a matte-black Range Rover cut through the darkness, pulling up sharply to the curb. Right behind it was Zoe’s signature electric blue SUV.

The doors flew open before the vehicles had even fully stopped. Zoe climbed out first, looking like an avenging angel in a tailored winter coat and knee-high boots. She didn’t bother looking at the brownstone; her eyes locked entirely on me and Lily.

Right behind her stepped Marcus, Zoe’s husband and a senior partner at one of Chicago’s top corporate law firms, flanked by Sarah, our fierce head-of-security friend from my tech firm.

Zoe dropped to her knees in front of me, her expression a mix of maternal fury and absolute loyalty. “Let me see her.”

She gently cupped Lily’s face, inspecting the angry red handprint blooming across the child’s pale cheek. Zoe’s breath hitched, and the look she flashed toward the heavy oak doors of the Peterson brownstone could have melted steel.

“Marcus,” Zoe said, her voice dangerously quiet. “Call the precinct and check if Detective Miller is on duty. We’re filing an assault report tonight. Not tomorrow. Tonight.”

“Way ahead of you,” Marcus said, already tapping his phone, his sharp legal mind clicking into gear. “Also, I’m pulling every financial paper trail linking Mark to Frank Peterson’s real estate holdings. If they want a war, they’re going to get a foreclosure.”

Sarah stepped up, opening the rear door of the Range Rover and holding out a plush, heated travel blanket. “Chloe, get inside. The car is warm. I’ve got thermal boots and a jacket for Lily, too.”

I gently slid Lily into the back seat, wrapping her in the blanket as Sarah handed her a warm cup of hot cocoa she’d picked up from a 24-hour drive-thru. Lily took a sip, her big eyes blinking up at me. “Mommy, are we safe?”

“We are safer than we’ve ever been, baby,” I whispered, kissing her forehead.

I climbed into the front passenger seat, Zoe sliding in behind the wheel. Before she put the car in drive, Zoe looked at me, her eyes flashing. “Are you ready to blow their pristine little world to smithereens?”

May you like

I looked back at the glowing windows of the brownstone, where the wealthy, untouchable Petersons were probably sitting down to pumpkin pie, completely oblivious to the wrecking ball parked outside.

“Let’s destroy them,” I said.
