Chapter 5 - Shadows in the Glass

We left the gala before midnight. The message had been delivered, but the air outside was thick with an ominous stillness.
Snow had begun to fall over Chicago, dusting the black roof of the limousine in white powder as we sped back toward Lake Forest. Inside the car, Damian remained vigilant, his fingers resting near the concealed holster beneath his tuxedo jacket.
"You handled yourself brilliantly tonight," he said quietly, looking across at me. The glow of the streetlights washed over his scarred brow.
"I grew up in the South Side, Damian," I said with a faint smile. "Spoiled heiresses don't frighten me. What frightens me is what they're willing to pay others to do."
He nodded slowly. "Giancarlo is cornered. When rats are cornered, they get reckless."
"Why did he target Luca?" The question had been burning in my chest for weeks. "Luca is six years old. Even in your world, isn't there a code?"
Damian’s jaw tightened. He turned to look out the darkened window into the swirling snow.
"Luca’s mother, Evelyn... she was Giancarlo’s cousin," Damian said, his voice hollow with old, buried pain. "It was an arranged alliance five years ago to keep peace between our factions. But Evelyn couldn't handle the life. She wanted out. Two years after Luca was born, she took twenty million from my vaults and attempted to flee the country with a rival lieutenant."
My heart ached for him. "What happened?"
"Giancarlo thought I had murdered her to keep the money," Damian said coldly. "The truth was far uglier. The lieutenant betrayed her, took the cash, and killed her in an abandoned motel in Detroit. I hunted the man down and ended him. But Giancarlo never accepted the truth. In his warped mind, Luca is a reminder of his family's dishonor. He wanted Luca dead to balance the scales."
I reached across the leather seat and placed my hand over his. Damian froze at the touch, then slowly turned his hand over, intertwining his long fingers with mine.
"You did everything you could to protect him," I whispered.
"It wasn't enough," he said rawly. "You protected him. You took the glass that was meant to end my lineage."
Suddenly, Marco yelled from the front: **"Incoming! Hold on!"**
A deafening CRASH obliterated the silence.
A heavy snowplow slammed violently into the side of our lead escort vehicle, flipping it into a wall of snow. Instantly, black SUVs boxed in our limousine from the front and rear, tires screeching on the iced pavement.
The night exploded with gunfire.
Bullets struck the reinforced armor of our Mercedes with dull, ringing thuds like hailstones from hell.
Damian moved before I could scream. He pushed me down onto the floorboards, covering my entire body with his broad frame, his tuxedo jacket shielding my head.
"Stay down!" he roared.
Marco slammed the accelerator, ramming the car forward into the rear of the blocking SUV, tires smoking as steel groaned against steel.
From the front passenger seat, Damian's lieutenant drew an automatic rifle and returned fire through the reinforced gun ports. Damian pulled a black sidearm from his shoulder holster, rolled down his window an inch, and fired three precise shots into the darkness.
A man holding an explosive launcher collapsed into the slush on the roadside.
"Marco, ram the intersection! Now!" Damian commanded.
The heavy Mercedes surged forward with a monstrous roar of horsepower, shattering the blockade and tearing onto the expressway ramp. Behind us, sirens wailed in the distance as police interceptors scrambled toward the chaos.
Inside the car, the scent of gunpowder was suffocating.
Damian lowered his weapon and looked down at me. His face was pale, his eyes wide with a frantic terror I had never seen in him before.
"Emma! Are you hit? Did you take a bullet?" His hands were everywhere—checking my arms, my torso, frantically scanning for blood.
"I'm okay! I'm okay, Damian!" I grabbed his trembling hands, holding them against my chest. "You shielded me. I'm completely fine."
Damian let out a shuddering, broken breath. Suddenly, he pulled me against his chest, burying his face into my hair, holding me so tightly I could feel the wild, erratic thumping of his heart against my ribs.
May you like
"Never again," he whispered hoarsely against my skin. "I won't let them touch you. Never again."
