Chapter 10 - Forever Bound

Six months later, the scars on my body had faded to faint, silver reminders of a life that felt like a distant nightmare.
The Chicago underworld had ceased to exist in the shadows; Damian had systematically dismantled the corrupt syndicates, consolidating his empire into legitimate international shipping, green energy, and high-tech real estate. The city called him a visionary.
I called him mine.
The golden afternoon sunlight streamed through the restored crystal chandeliers of Bellamy House.
The grand ballroom, completely rebuilt and renamed the *Carter-Vescari Center for Children's Welfare*, was filled with laughter, classical music, and hundreds of Chicago’s most distinguished figures. But there were no snobs, no whispers, and no threats.
Today was the official opening of the foundation Damian had built in my name, dedicated to providing housing, education, and medical care for underprivileged families across the state.
I stood near the arched mezzanine balcony, wearing an ivory silk gown that flowed like liquid pearl.
Tiny footsteps tapped hurriedly across the polished marble.
"Mom! Look! Terry has a bowtie!"
Luca, now seven years old, dressed in a miniature navy tuxedo matching his father's, ran up to me, proudly holding up his plastic dinosaur, which was now sporting a tiny silk black bowtie.
My heart swelled with an overwhelming, incandescent warmth. "Mom." The word had become my favorite sound in the English language.
"Terry looks very distinguished, sweetheart," I said, kneeling to kiss his rosy cheek. "Are you ready for the speeches?"
"Papa says I don't have to give a speech because I'm the vice-president of the toy division," Luca said with absolute seriousness.
A rich, deep chuckle echoed behind us.
Damian stepped forward, tall, impossibly handsome, his dark hair neatly styled, his tailored black suit fitting his broad frame to perfection. The faint scar over his eyebrow crinkled as he looked down at us with eyes overflowing with adoration.
"Go find Elena, Luca. She has strawberry gelato waiting behind the terrace," Damian said softly.
Luca cheered, kissed my hand like a little gentleman, and dashed off across the ballroom, waving his dinosaur at the laughing guests.
When we were alone, Damian stepped closer, his warm hands resting gently on my waist, pulling me against his chest.
"You look breathtaking, Emma," he murmured, his dark eyes consuming me.
"You built an entire charity center just to rename the room where I nearly bled to death?" I teased, resting my hands on his lapels, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of his heart beneath my palms.
"I wanted to rewrite the memories of this place," Damian answered, his voice dropping into that deep, magnetic register that never failed to send a shiver down my spine. "I wanted you to remember this room not as the place where you were broken, but as the place where my life truly began."
He reached into his breast pocket and pulled out a small black velvet box.
My breath hitched in my throat.
Damian Vescari—the most feared, powerful man in the city, who had never knelt before any king or law—slowly dropped to one knee on the polished marble floor.
The ballroom went silent. Not out of fear, as it had six months ago, but in breathless, awestruck anticipation.
Damian opened the box, revealing a flawless emerald ring encircled by brilliant diamonds, catching the sunlight like a captured star.
"Seven months ago, you threw your body over my son without knowing who he was or what it would cost you," Damian said, his voice ringing with pure, unwavering conviction. "You gave him a mother. You gave this cold, violent monster a reason to become a better man. You are my home, Emma. My salvation. My entire world."
He looked up into my tear-filled eyes, his own shining with raw love.
"Emma Carter, will you marry me? Will you make me the happiest man on this earth?"
Tears of pure, unadulterated joy spilled over my cheeks. I didn't hesitate for a fraction of a second.
"Yes," I choked out, a laugh breaking through my tears. "Yes, Damian! A thousand times, yes!"
Damian stood up, slid the ring onto my finger, and pulled me into his arms, lifting me off the ground as he captured my mouth in a passionate, breathtaking kiss.
The ballroom erupted into thunderous, joyous applause. Luca came running back, jumping into our arms, hugging us both as Damian held the two of us together, locked in an unbreakable embrace.

I had entered Bellamy House as a server with twenty-three dollars in my bank account and nothing to lose.
I stood in it now as a mother, a protector, and the beloved wife of the man who ruled the city—wrapped in love, surrounded by family, and finally, eternally home.
