Chapter 17 - The Architecture of Deceit

The revelation hit me like a physical blow. The fourteen years of torment I had endured—the sleepless nights, the belittling comments, the casual cruelties, and finally the day Julian dragged me by the collar into the living room, forced me onto my knees, and sheared off my thick chestnut hair while Vanessa sneered and sipped vintage champagne—none of it was accidental.

It was not merely the sadistic impulse of a petty narcissist. It was a calculated psychological campaign designed to break my mind until I would sign away any document thrust in front of me without question.

"Julian knew?" My voice dropped to a lethal, quiet register that made even Marcus straighten in his seat. "The entire time we were married, he knew who my real family was?"

"He did not know the full extent of the wealth, but he knew you possessed a sovereign trust," Maitre Laurent answered gravely. "Sebastian Saint-Germain promised Julian ten percent of the Saint-Germain liquid assets if he could secure your signature on an irrevocable asset transfer before your thirty-fifth birthday. That deadline is in three days, Elena."

Marcus’s phone buzzed violently. He answered, listened for ten seconds, and his face turned to granite. "Elena, we have a major problem. The federal detention center in Manhattan just confirmed that Julian Croft suffered an apparent medical emergency during transit. The ambulance was intercepted. Julian is gone."

"Escaped?" Rachel drew a sharp breath, her hand instinctively moving toward her concealed holster. "On American soil?"

"He didn't escape alone," Marcus said, looking at me. "The private jet registered to a dummy corporation owned by Sebastian Saint-Germain took off from Teterboro airport two hours ago. Destination: Geneva."

I stood up, closing the leather journal and sliding the brass key into my pocket. The frightened, humiliated woman who had wept on the cold floor of the Mercer Street townhouse was dead. In her place stood the true heir of the House of Saint-Germain.

"Let him come to Switzerland," I said, cold fire burning in my veins. "He took my hair, my youth, and my peace. Now he comes for my birthright. Marcus, contact the Swiss Federal Police. Maitre Laurent, assemble the board of Banque Saint-Germain. It's time for Julian to realize that the woman he tried to break is about to destroy him."
