Chapter 16 - The Sovereign's Secret

The private salon inside the Grand Hotel Les Trois Rois overlooked the icy Rhine river. Sitting across from me was Henri Laurent, an octogenarian attorney with sharp silver eyes and hands that moved with surgical precision across antique mahogany. On the table between us rested a heavy bronze lockbox bearing the crest of a coiled serpent and a blooming rose.
"Your mother, Rosewood, was the most extraordinary woman I ever represented," Maitre Laurent began, his French-accented voice steady and reverent. "Thirty years ago, she did not merely flee a broken romance. She fled a war of succession."
"Who was my father, Maitre Laurent?" I leaned forward, my voice unwavering. "Arthur Vance spent thirty years believing I was his. Now Julian Croft is using offshore lawyers to break out of prison. Tell me the truth."
Laurent placed an ornate brass key on the table and slid it toward me. "Open it, Elena. Your mother instructed that no hand but yours should unlock the seals."
I took the key. It felt icy against my skin. Inserting it into the bronze mechanism, I turned it until a soft chime resonated through the quiet room. Inside lay a leather-bound journal written in my mother's delicate, looping cursive, alongside an international share certificate representing forty-nine percent controlling interest in Banque Saint-Germain—valued at over two billion Swiss Francs.
Tucked into the first page of the journal was a black-and-white photograph. It showed my mother smiling radiantly in a garden, her hand resting on the arm of a distinguished man with high cheekbones and striking, obsidian eyes—features that mirrored my own with terrifying exactness.

"His name was Christian Saint-Germain," Laurent whispered. "The former patriarch of the Saint-Germain bank. And the man who financed Julian Croft’s rise to power twenty years ago was not an investor... it was Christian’s disinherited younger brother, Sebastian. Julian was placed in your life intentionally, Elena. His mission was to marry you, strip you of your confidence, destroy your spirit, and force you to surrender your mother's hidden inheritance."
