Chapter 23 - The Crown of Thorns

The silence that followed was suffocating.

Rain lashed against the cathedral roof like gunfire. I stood frozen between two worlds: the titan who had trained me to be a predator, and the ghost from the past who claimed to be my true blood.

My fingers curled around the handle of my blade until my knuckles turned bloodless.

"You think this makes us family?" I whispered, my voice rising from the abyss, trembling with a fury so cold and absolute that the candlelight flickered.

Julian’s eyes widened slightly. "Seraphina... I am offering you freedom. Justice. The destruction of Arthur Thorne’s empire."

"Arthur Thorne may be a monster," I said, stepping back, raising my chin with the lethal majesty of a woman who had survived hell itself. "He may have lied to me. He may have treated me as a key to his vaults. But you... you let my mother vanish. You stayed in your ivory tower in Switzerland for twenty-five years while I was starved, beaten, and humiliated by the Vance family!"

"I didn't know where you were!" Julian cried, for the first time losing his calm composure. "Arthur fabricated your death records!"

"A real father burns the world to find his daughter," I spat, my eyes flashing with diamond-hard resolve. "Arthur came with gunships to Pier 44. You came with an old piece of paper and a threat against my baby's cradle."

I pocketed my blade and turned toward the heavy cathedral doors.

"Seraphina!" Julian shouted, his obsidian cane slamming into the stone aisle. "If you walk out of these doors, Arthur will know you discovered the truth! Sterling is already moving toward your penthouse! He will take Aurelia to Iceland, and you will never see her again!"

I halted at the threshold of the cathedral, the cold night wind whipping my hair across my face.

I pulled out my phone and dialed the direct, unmonitored emergency frequency of Commander Sterling.

The call connected on the first ring.

"Commander Sterling," I spoke with ice in my veins. "Confirm your current location."

There was a heavy pause on the line. Then, the sound of a firearm chambering a round.

*"Forgive me, Miss Thorne,"* Sterling’s voice came through, grim and strained. *"The Chairman's orders are absolute. The helicopter has just lifted off from the penthouse helipad. Aurelia is in my custody. If you wish to join us, you have twenty minutes to report to Teterboro Airport... unarmed and alone."*

A second line beeped in my ear.

It was Arthur Thorne.

I merged the calls, my voice dropping into a register of sheer, apocalyptic wrath that silenced both men instantly.

"Listen to me very carefully, Arthur," I whispered into the phone, the storm howling around me. "And listen to me, Commander Sterling. If so much as a single tear falls from Aurelia’s eyes before that helicopter touches the tarmac, I will not just destroy the Laurents or the Blackwoods. I will tear down the Thorne empire brick by bloody brick, burn every ship in your fleet, and feed your legacy to the ocean."

Arthur’s voice broke through the line, cold yet subtly shaken. *"Seraphina... you don't understand what's at stake—"*

"I understand everything," I cut him off. "I know who my mother was. I know what the Continental Trust is. And now, you are going to learn what happens when you train a lioness to hunt... and then steal her cub."

I ended the call, thrust the phone into my pocket, and turned back toward Julian Blackwood, who stood in the center of the candlelit nave, watching me in stunned disbelief.

"You wanted an alliance, Lord Blackwood?" I smiled, a terrifying, beautiful smile drenched in vengeance. "Give me your private jet. Give me your satellite tracking network. And together, we will show Arthur Thorne what happens when the Crown Princess takes the throne by force."

Julian stared at me for a heartbeat, and then, a slow, sinister grin spread across his aristocratic face as he extended his hand.

"Welcome home, my Queen."

Behind us, through the grand stained-glass windows, the searchlights of approaching attack helicopters swept across the sky, their sirens wailing through the black midnight storm.

The real war had only just begun.
