Chapter 11 - Shattered Illusions

The central family courthouse was packed to capacity the next morning. Press from five continents lined the corridors, their cameras clicking incessantly as Eleanor Vance arrived in an expensive wheelchair, pretending to be frail, flanked by Julian Cross and a pale, twitching Daniel.
Judge Margaret Harrison banged her gavel, silencing the murmurs.
"We are here to review the emergency motion for paternity rights and temporary injunction filed by the Vance estate against Vivienne Thorne," Judge Harrison announced sternly. "Mr. Cross, present your claim."
Julian Cross stood up arrogantly, smoothing his lapels. "Your Honor, my client, Daniel Vance, is the recognized legal husband and father. We have undisputed evidence of a co-parenting agreement signed during the pregnancy, establishing that the Vance family holds primary physical custody due to Miss Thorne's unstable history of homelessness and financial incapacity."
Eleanor dabbed a fake tear from her eye with a lace handkerchief, playing the role of a grieving grandmother to perfection.
"Miss Thorne's counsel?" Judge Harrison looked toward our table.
I stood up, adjusting my microphone. I didn't let my lawyer speak. I spoke for myself.
"Your Honor," I began, my voice clear and authoritative, resonating through the wood-paneled courtroom. "The documents presented by Mr. Cross are the fruit of a criminal conspiracy. Last night, federal authorities arrested Miss Chloe Miller for attempting to extort five million dollars from me using those very papers. Here is the verified affidavit from the FBI."
Cassandra walked forward, handing a thick file to the bailiff, who passed it to the judge.
Eleanor's hands began to tremble. Daniel gasped, his face draining of color.
"Furthermore," I continued, "regarding Daniel Vance's claim of biological paternity... I submit to the court Exhibit D: a comprehensive DNA panel conducted at St. Jude Thorne Memorial upon Aurelia's birth, cross-referenced with Daniel Vance’s mandatory medical records from his recent arrest."
Julian Cross frowned. "Your Honor, this is irrelevant! The child was born in wedlock!"
"It is entirely relevant, Mr. Cross," I said, a dangerous gleam in my eyes. "Because Daniel Vance is not the biological father."
A collective gasp swept through the gallery like an electric shock. Daniel stood up abruptly, knocking his chair over. "What?! What did you just say?!"
Eleanor gripped her armrests, her mouth opening and closing like a suffocating fish.
"Three years ago, Daniel, before our wedding," I explained calmly, projecting every word for the press to hear, "you underwent an experimental surgery for sports-related trauma. You were diagnosed with complete azoospermia. You are medically sterile, Daniel. You have been infertile your entire life."
"Liar! You're lying!" Daniel screamed, tears of humiliation bursting from his eyes. "We used a donor clinic! You promised we would never speak of it!"
"No, Daniel," I countered, dropping the final bombshell. "You secretly used donor sperm from an anonymous high-profile donor bank without my knowledge, forging my consent on the fertility clinic papers. But what your cheap clinic didn't know was that the donor catalogue you used was part of a confidential Thorne family medical reserve. Aurelia was conceived through my own late mother’s preserved genetic lineage program. She shares zero percent of Vance DNA. She is entirely, genetically, and legally... a Thorne."
Judge Harrison reviewed the medical documents, her expression turning thunderous.
She slammed the gavel down with a resounding crack.
"Injunction dismissed with prejudice! All custody and visitation motions filed by the Vance estate are permanently denied! Furthermore, I am referring Mr. Julian Cross and Mrs. Eleanor Vance to the State Attorney General for perjury and systemic fraud!"

Eleanor shrieked, collapsing in her wheelchair as court officers moved in to re-arrest her. Daniel collapsed onto his knees, sobbing uncontrollably into the carpet, totally stripped of his name, his pride, and his delusion of fatherhood.
I walked out of the courtroom with my head held high, the flashbulbs blinding, the crowd cheering my triumph.
