Chapter 22 - The Shattered Heritage

The world spun on its axis.

The stone floor beneath my boots felt as if it were turning to liquid. My heart slammed against my ribs so violently I could hear it ringing in my ears.

"You're lying," I whispered, my voice trembling for the first time in months. "My father loved my mother. She died of illness when I was an infant!"

"Did she?" Julian challenged, his gaze unyielding, devoid of malice yet heavy with absolute certainty. "Ask yourself, Seraphina. Why did Arthur hide you away in private boarding schools across the globe under false names until you were eighteen? Why did he let the Vance family—the distant, disgraced branch of Eleanor's ancestry—believe you were an impoverished orphan?"

My mind raced through memories of my childhood. The locked doors in the east wing. The absence of a single photograph of my mother in the grand Thorne estate. The mysterious financial trusts established in Swiss jurisdictions under codes that Arthur never allowed me to see.

"Arthur wanted to keep you hidden from me," Julian said, stepping closer, his obsidian cane tapping softly against the stone. "He knew that if the Blackwood bloodline ever discovered that Eleanor’s daughter was alive, the supreme inheritance of the Continental Trust would legally bypass Arthur Thorne entirely and fall directly into your hands."

"I am a Thorne," I snarled, drawing my ceramic blade and pointing it directly at his throat. "I will not let an old ghost poison my mind against the man who raised me!"

Julian didn't flinch at the blade resting inches from his carotid artery. He simply looked down at me with an expression of profound sorrow.

"Look at your left wrist, child," Julian said quietly.

I froze.

"Beneath your watch. The faint, star-shaped birthmark behind your tendon," Julian murmured. "Arthur tells you it was an accidental scar from a childhood fall. But every direct descendant of the Blackwood bloodline carries the Mark of the Phoenix. Your mother had it. I have it. And so does little Aurelia."

My breath hitched.

Aurelia had that exact tiny, star-shaped mark on her left wrist. I had noticed it the day she was born. The doctors had dismissed it as a benign pigmentation.

"Arthur Thorne used Daniel Vance as a pawn to test your resilience," Julian continued, his voice dropping to a hypnotic, chilling whisper. "He allowed you to suffer under that pathetic family because he wanted you hardened, shaped into a ruthless weapon to protect *his* empire. He never intended to make you an heir out of love, Seraphina. He made you his heir because the global banking syndicates demanded proof of Eleanor’s bloodline before they would release the fifty-billion-dollar maritime bonds!"

"Stop," I breathed, my hand trembling against the hilt of the blade. "Stop talking!"

"Look at your phone, Seraphina," Julian commanded softly.

My burner phone vibrated in my coat pocket.

Slowly, keeping my blade leveled at Julian’s chest, I pulled out the device with my left hand and unlocked the screen.

It was an encrypted surveillance audio clip, intercepted directly from Arthur Thorne’s private study at the estate ten minutes ago.

My father’s voice—cold, calculating, and detached—played through the speaker:

*"...If Julian Blackwood tells her the truth tonight, Sterling, you know what must be done. Seraphina's loyalty must remain absolute. If she wavers, take the child to the safehouse in Reykjavik. A daughter who questions her master is a liability we cannot afford."*

The recording clicked off.

A bottomless chasm opened beneath my feet.

The man who had raised me. The man who had supposedly stormed the gates of hell to back me up against the Laurents... had viewed me as nothing more than an asset to be managed. A weapon. A golden key to an ancient vault.

"He played you, my daughter," Julian Blackwood whispered, extending an open hand toward me beneath the flickering candlelight. "He took your mother. He took your youth. He turned your life into a gilded prison. But the House of Blackwood has come to reclaim its true Queen."
