Chapter 7 - The Code Silver Alert

The shrill, mechanical blare of the hospital-wide intercom tore through the quiet of the pediatric ward.

*"Code Silver. All personnel, Code Silver on Level 4. Secure all patient rooms immediately. Code Silver on Level 4."*

A Code Silver meant an active, armed threat.

Olivia’s instincts took over before panic could even register. "Richard, help me barricade this door! Dr. Mercer, draw the privacy curtains and drop the blinds!"

Richard Cole shoved a heavy steel supply cart against the thick wooden door of Room 412, bracing his substantial weight against it. Outside, shouts echoed down the hallway, accompanied by the deafening crack of a gunshot hitting the reinforced drywall near the nurses' station.

"Stay down!" Sarah Cole cried, throwing her body across Ethan on the bed to shield him.

Ethan began to tremble, but Olivia leaned close to his ear, holding his left hand with both of hers. "Ethan, look at me. Close your eyes and think about your favorite song. Don't look away from my face. I'm right here. Nobody is getting into this room."

Outside, heavy footsteps approached Room 412. The brass doorknob rattled violently.

"Open the door, Bennett!" a frantic, hoarse voice snarled through the wood. It wasn't the man in the trench coat—it was Dr. Robert Sterling himself, completely unraveled, his prestigious white coat stained with grime and sweat. "You destroyed my career! You destroyed my life! Open the damn door before I blow the lock off!"

"Sterling, drop the weapon!" Agent Vance’s voice bellowed from the hallway.

A brief scuffle, followed by a heavy thud, shook the doorframe. Sterling screamed in rage, but the sound was abruptly choked off as two federal marshals tackled him to the floor. The metallic clatter of a revolver skittering across the linoleum tile signaled the end of the threat.

"Suspect is secured! Clear! Hallway is clear!" Vance announced loudly.

Richard dragged the cart away and pulled the door open. Dr. Sterling was pinned to the floor in heavy steel cuffs, spitting curses, his glasses shattered.

Olivia stepped into the doorway, standing tall, her uniform pristine despite the grueling night. She looked down at the disgraced department head with utter disgust.

"Ethan moved his left hand, Dr. Sterling," Olivia said with cold, resolute dignity. "He survived. And every single patient you sacrificed will get justice because of him."

Sterling could only glare in mute, terrified defeat as the agents hauled him away toward the elevators.
